This “imperial doppelbock” is not for the faint of heart. Aged on oak chips, it boasts assertive aromas of caramel malt, vanilla, pecan pie and sweet toasted oak, with a warm, alcohol presence. Flavors of dark red plum, cherry and fig counter the otherwise rich and malt-driven flavors. The palate is big and warm, the round, lush mouthfeel coupled with low carbonation. Flavors of vanilla bean, brown sugar and toasted oak linger on the long finish. Lauren Buzzeo

What Is Blind Tasting?

All tastings reported in the Buying Guide are performed blind. Typically, products are tasted in peer-group flights of from 5-8 samples. Reviewers may know general information about a flight to provide context—vintage, variety or appellation—but never the producer or retail price of any given selection. When possible, products considered flawed or uncustomary are retasted.
