Expert Reviews

Dry, crisp and nice, this has white fruit aromas that are familiar and friendly. It comes across medium bodied, dusty and yeasty, with an apple accent and a vanilla flavor. The finish is lightly toasted and slightly briny.

Neutral for the most part, with fresh acidity, light bubbles and basic apple and peach flavors. A little sweet and confected but perfectly good. Solid for simple sipping and mimosas.

Sweet and a little grassy on the nose, with lemon-lime aromas. The palate has a solid, regular, friendly feel along with sweet flavors of white nectarine, apple juice and tarragon. Perfectly quaffable, dry in feel despite being semisweet, and balanced. For the price, what’s not to like? Imported

Yellow apple aromas and flavors get some pick-up from nectarine, and while it’s sweet and a bit candied, that’s the Carta Nevada style. The finish picks up some extra size, leaving a big wash of sweet citrus flavor.

There’s nothing not to like about this affordable Spanish bubbly. The nose is a little candied and shy, but it’s pleasant overall. The palate foams a bit more than a stately Cava might, but the flavors of pear, apple and grapefruit are honest. Fresh yet soft, simple and easygoing.

Consistency at a good price is what this textbook cava is all about. The bouquet offers your basic fruit-cocktail aromas, while the palate is sort of plump as it pours on the nectarine and ripe peach flavors. Easygoing, with some weight and roundness.

Neutral yet clean, with pineapple and lemon-lime on both the nose and palate. Nothing out of the ordinary here. It’s exactly as it has been for years: bubbly, a touch sweet and satisfying. Imported by Freixenet USA.

This bubbly’s simplicity is its calling card. It pitches sweet pear aromas along with notes of white bread. Flavors of orange, lemon and melon are just as they should be, with a touch of sweetness. Not terribly complex, but correct in a steady, mass-appeal way.

Shows an appealing earthy-chalky note alongside daisies and fresh ginger that gives this Cava more complexity than most others. Spicy and earthy on the finish.

The nose is bright, bordering on sharp. It carries a note of medicine, yeast and even celery. Lemon, orange and melon flavors work well together, and it as a whole it seems to be snappy and fresh at all points. —M.S.

Chalky, lemony aromas and slightly buttery yellow plum flavors give this bargain bubbly more pop than pretty much anything else in this price range. Even the dry, lime-tinged finish sparkles. It’s light and not particularly complex, but it’s still a steal.
