This pours a reddish-brown color, with glimmers of copper when held up to the light. The carbonation looks moderately aggressive from the outset, though the head doesn't linger long. Caramel, brown sugar, toasted malt and brown-bread aromas lead the nose, while the palate offers fruit-driven flavors of baked apple, dried cherry and raisin that flesh out the malty core. It's medium-full in the mouth, with lifting carbonation and hints of grassy hops that linger on the lightly bitter finish. Iron Horse Beverage LLC. Lauren Buzzeo

What Is Blind Tasting?

All tastings reported in the Buying Guide are performed blind. Typically, products are tasted in peer-group flights of from 5-8 samples. Reviewers may know general information about a flight to provide context—vintage, variety or appellation—but never the producer or retail price of any given selection. When possible, products considered flawed or uncustomary are retasted.
