Hidalgo NV Oloroso Viejo Sherry (Jerez)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $116
A serious and intense wine, with coffee and mocha on the nose, and a sharp dried-apricot and toasted-nut character on the palate. Power is this wine’s calling card, as it hits like a bomb. The flavors are huge, the mouthfeel big but balanced. This is aged Oloroso in top form.  — M.S.  (6/1/2005)

Hidalgo NV Vino Dulce Natural Pedro Ximénez (Jerez)

  1. $16
Licorice city on the nose, so much so that it smells like the real thing. In the mouth, it is thick as they come. Flavors of maple, white raisins and milk chocolate are in your face and delicious. Expect a syrupy wine that requires a knife to cut through. Still, it’s a wonderful reflection of this generous, sweet-leaning grape.  — M.S.  (10/1/2008)

Hidalgo NV Marqués de Rodil Palo Cortado Sherry (Jerez)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $42
Light in color, with pecan pie aromas. There’s nothing heavy or blowsy about this refined palo cortado; it’s tight in the mouth, with narrowing acidity and tangy, oily flavors of citrus, almond and rancio. Long as they come on the finish, with zero excess weight.  — M.S.  (5/1/2012)

Hidalgo NV Vino Dulce Natural Pedro Ximénez (Jerez)

  • Best Buy
  1. $14
Ultraconcentrated and almost heavy on the nose, but not fully syrupy or leaden. Has a heavy disposition in the mouth, with brown sugar, caramel and other usual suspects making up the flavor profile. Creamy and chunky on the finish. Excellent dessert wine for the price.  — M.S.  (4/1/2012)

Hidalgo NV Marqués de Rodil Especial Palo Cortado Palomino (Jerez)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $42
Delicious, refined and sexy, but that’s assuming you like palo cortado. Hidalgo’s version is alluring and full of caramel, salt and hazelnut; it has an excellent feel, sensational acidity and a long, long finish of salted cashews and bitter spice. Elegant, balanced and structured; it’s what Sherry lovers want from an elevated bottling.  — M.S.  (10/1/2008)

Hidalgo NV Villapanés Oloroso Seco Sherry (Jerez)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $42
True as dry oloroso comes, with nutty aromas combined with caramel richness. Feels raring to go, with pumped-up acidity that boosts otherwise normal flavors of dried white fruits, mixed nuts and brine. Tight, long and driving on the finish.  — M.S.  (5/1/2012)

Hidalgo NV La Panesa Especial Fino Sherry (Jerez)

  1. $40
Tan in color and elegant beyond what’s normal, this high-end fino shows full, complex aromas of honey, citrus, rancio, dried gouda cheese and nuttiness. It feels both easy and fresh, with dry, intense flavors of citrus and almond. Long and smooth on the finish, with zero burn or bite.  — M.S.  (4/1/2012)

Hidalgo 200 Solera Gran Reserva Brandy de Jerez

  1. $45
Pretty burnished-orange hue. Generous opening bouquet emits scents of nougat and cake frosting; aeration stimulates deep aromas of dark caramel, roasted almonds, oloroso Sherry and rancio. In the mouth it tastes of white raisins, cake batter, orange rind and oak resin. Finishes manageably sweet. A gorgeous treat from Spain.  — P.P.  (12/31/2002)
