Here’s an elegant, full-bodied Syrah that tastes good on the first sip, then gets better as you go along. It has wonderful balance, with firm, dusty tannins and fine acidity framing well-ripened cherry, mocha and white pepper flavors.

Jepson 1989 Late Disgorged Sparkling (Mendocino County)

There’s an intriguing vanilla-cream center to this excellent bubbly that had me reach for a second and third glass. There is also a fresh-baked apple-pie richness that runs right through from the opening sip to the long finish. Excellent wine from a lesser-known producer.

Jepson Signature Reserve Mendocino Alambic Brandy

Extremely bright amber color. Scents of baked pears and oak; aeration releases additional aromas of vanilla and cinnamon; it’s a sophisticated bouquet. Palate entry is slightly sweet; midpalate features oaky vanilla, ripe grapes and tropical fruit. Aftertaste is clean, lean, even austere.

Dry and minerally, yet a lot of depth for a crisp white. Viognier and Colombard team up with Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, for a harmonious commingling of lavender, licorice and white peaches. Tastes sweet upfront, with more dry citrus and complexity on the back.

Jepson 2000 Sauvignon Blanc (Mendocino County)

Jepson’s Sauvignon Blancs have long been lauded as among Mendocino’s best. Grown along the Russian River, on the flatlands, it’s typically racy and crisp. This version is richer and perhaps oakier than in the past, and emphasizes melon flavors over raw citrus. It has the weight of a Chardonnay, and is clearly designed to go with fine foods. —S.H.
