Trapiche 2006 Viña Federico Villafañe Single Vineyard Malbec (La Consulta)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $50
Probably the best value in high-end Malbec from Argentina is Trapiche’s single-vineyard series, which in 2006 was led by this bottling from an Uco Valley vineyard. It’s lush, perfectly ripe and full of cola, black fruit and intensity. There’s nary a chink in its fiber, and the rush of fruit that hits the palate followed by layers of subtleties is impressive. Great…  — M.S.  (7/1/2010)

Enthusiast 100 2011
The best of the 2008 batch of Trapiche single-vineyard Malbecs is this one from Jorge Miralles’ vineyard. Dark, smoky and elegant on the nose, with blackberry, cassis and toasty spice flavors. It’s juicy, deep and balanced, with a long, sultry, smooth finish. Pure and showing nary a fault. Drink now through 2015.  — M.S.  (8/1/2011)

Trapiche 2006 Viña Adriana Venturin Single Vineyard Malbec (La Consulta)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $50
From a 50+-year-old vineyard in La Consulta in the Uco Valley comes this bold, seriously built Malbec. Black cherry and coconut aromas settle in nicely, followed by forward raspberry, mocha and coffee notes. Great acidity, tannic foundation, structure and fillings; it’s like a happy house. Drink from 2011 through 2015.  — M.S.  (7/1/2010)

Dense, inky and sweet on the nose, with cassis, melted Swiss chocolate and well-integrated spice aromas. The palate has size and acidity, with toasty, creamy flavors of baked black fruits and coconut. Long on the finish, with vanilla and mocha; ripe, delicious and potent. Drink now through 2016.  — M.S.  (8/1/2011)

Trapiche 2004 Viña Victorio Coletto Malbec (Mendoza)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $50
While all of Trapiche’s single-vineyard Malbecs are excellent, this is the rock star of the group. From 50-year-old vines, Coletto offers prune, fruitcake and cedary aromas in front of a jammy but structured palate. Smooth as silk with hints of Port. A lovely, lush wine that should age well through 2012.  — W.E.  (12/1/2006)

Trapiche 2006 Viña Cristina y Bibiana Coletto Single Vineyard Malbec (Mendoza)

  • Cellar Selection

Another well-polished Malbec from Trapiche’s single-vineyard series. This one, from Tupungato in the Uco Valley, is the most “red” of the ’06s. The fruit is juicy and bursts with acidity and power. Cherry, red plum and cassis are the lead flavors, and it finishes on a bed of chocolate and peppery spice. Good now but will benefit from another year or two in bottle.  — M.S.  (7/1/2010)

Trapiche 2005 Viña Fausto Orellana Single Vineyard Malbec (Mendoza)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $47
Our favorite of the Trapiche 2005 single-vineyard Malbecs is this one from Fausto Orellana. Winemaker Daniel Pi has made a brawny but savory wine with structure, core acidity and bold flavors. The palate is chunky and expansive, but also smooth and well directed. Some unabsorbed oak, tannins and more indicate that this bruiser is here to stay. Best from 2009…  — M.S.  (11/1/2008)

Top 100 Cellar Selections 2011
A little bit hickory-dominated on the bouquet, but also giving balsamic notes, blackberry and chocolate mint. The palate is linear due to a streak of cutting acidity, while the palate is also snappy with wild raspberry and bright plum flavors and plenty of wood tannin. A toasty finish with espresso and chocolate is fine and long. Drink now through 2017.  — M.S.  (8/1/2011)
