Windsor 1999 Toni Stockhausen Signature Series Zinfandel (Mendocino County)
Best Buy
Price
$17
Good, interesting wine from this specialty winery. It starts with clean, complex Zinny aromas of briary, brambly berries, and turns rich and complex on the palate. It’s bone dry, with the structure of a fine red wine, and Zin’s particular exuberance. The long finish suggests midterm aging potential.

Windsor 1997 Old Vines Wild Thing Zinfandel (Mendocino County)
Price
$16
A spicy, zinny nose showing lots of delicious fruit. Fermented with wild yeasts and aged in 100% American oak, it’s an appealing, delicious wine for this price. The flavors linger through a satisfying finish, and it doesn’t hit that tannic wall that stops so many of the ’97s.

Windsor 1997 Toni Stockhausen Signature Series Meritage (Sonoma County)
Price
$23
Ripe and smoky, this quintessentially Californian wine is softly fruity, with big, effusive berry and stone fruit flavors and melted tannins. It's dry and rich, with a long delicious finish.

Windsor 1997 Preston Ranch Private Reserve Chardonnay (Russian River Valley)
Price
$15
Complex, engaging nose with tropical fruit, coconut, and an earthy, leesy component. Creamy vanilla and tropical fruit with mineral highlights keep the palate interesting, too. Creamy feel, long finish. Rich and expressive.

Windsor 1998 Private Reserve Syrah (Sonoma County)
Price
$16
The initial aromas from this wine can only be described as funky, combining some tarry, sulfurous qualities with heavy-toast oak barrels—thankfully they burn off after a few minutes in the glass. There’s nice fruit underneath all of that: Dark chocolate and plum flavors accompany a rich, chewy mouthfeel. Some brighter notes emerge on the softly tannic finish.

Windsor 1997 Stockhausen Signature Series Merlot (Sonoma County)
Price
$25
Smells warm, with well-ripened plummy, blackberry aromas. The flavors are deeply fruity and full bodied, with masses of berry fruit in a dry, soft package. This is an easy-drinking fun wine.
