Stuart Cellars 1998 Vintage Zinfandel (Temecula)

  1. $42
Black as ink, with glints of royal purple and gold, it opens with intense, penetrating aromas of dark chocolate, blackberry preserves and cassis, caramel, and a smoky, peppery note. Decadently rich, with 10% residual sugar, and heady, with 19% alcohol, but so delicious. The silky, velvety texture is pure seduction. This has got to be one of the best California…  — S.H.  (4/1/2002)

Hart Winery 1999 Syrah (Temecula)

  1. $24
An amazing wine, with an impenetrable color, that begins with a burst of freshly ground black pepper sprinkled over blackberries, blueberries and rum-soaked plums, and rich scents of grilled, smoked meat. The flavors are dramatic and bold, all cherries, berries, chocolate and spices that change with every swirl. This dry, richly balanced wine is sheer heaven. —S.H.  — S.H.  (4/1/2002)

Rex Hill 1999 Reserve Pinot Noir

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $48
This winery’s top Pinot is a wonder especially in this superb vintage. Lush flavors blend cherry fruit, toasty oak, hints of coconut, chocolate and cinnamon into a complete and delicious whole. Detailed and supple, it fills the mouth with complex and focused flavors. The long, trailing finish is reminiscent of grand cru Burgundy. Cellar Selection. —P.G.  — P.G.  (4/1/2002)

Kenwood 1997 Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma County)

  1. $75
From one of the largest and most highly touted vintages in a great decade, this is large and fairly fat. The cassis, fruitcake and menthol nose and sweet blackberry and chocolate palate aim to please…and do just that. It feels a bit low in acidity, making it lush and forward, displaying a bit of heat and a looser structure. Still, this pleasure package is young…  — W.E.  (4/1/2002)

Falkner 1999 Amante Sangiovese

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $16
A terrific super-Tuscan blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Rich and full-bodied, with obvious pedigree, it features great balance of ripe fruit, soft, dusty tannins and refreshing acidity. This is a first-rate wine that amply shows how good grapes can be in Temecula. —S.H.  — S.H.  (4/1/2002)

Joan D'Anguera 1999 El Bugader Shiraz (Tarragona)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $50
“Mr. Shiraz” is what the late father Josep D’Anguerra was called. This Shiraz blend justifies that name. Josep started planting the grape back in 1977 and it is doing very well in Tarragona, giving us a wine that is bluish-black in color with a jammy blackberry nose and wisps of frying bacon. Rich tannins beautifully balance the intense fruit and tangy acids. Drink…  — C.S.  (4/1/2002)

Kenwood 1995 Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma Valley)

  1. $65
The lovely nose of rich briary fruit, licorice, vanilla cream and anise pulls you in to this luscious and lushly textured wine. It’s very smooth and suave on the tongue, offering deep cassis flavors and tobacco accents. Long and dry, the finish shows spicy oak, berries and espresso. Drink now-2008.  — W.E.  (4/1/2002)

Torres 1997 Mas La Plana Cabernet Sauvignon (Penedès)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $25
Ripe blackberry and cherry fruit and classy oak team up to deliver the goods in this palate-pleasing Cabernet Sauvignon. There’s plenty of tobacco and earth, and in style and weight it’s somewhere between Bordeaux and California, with a heavier nod to the former. Already delicious, this will hold well through the decade, maybe longer. It is an apt demonstration of…  — M.M.  (4/1/2002)
