KWV 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon (Western Cape)

  • Best Buy
  1. $10
The nose of buttered toast, golden raisins, dried herbs, oiled leather, black olives and radicchio extends to the palate. A slightly herby tang to the finish imparts cleanness on the palate. A delicious expression of fruit that is subtle but well structured, not to mention inexpensive.  — K.F.  (4/1/2003)

Marques de Monistrol 1999 Masia Monistrol SIngle Vineyard Reserva Especial Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot (Penedès)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $20
Juicy blackberry and plum flavors have just enough of a charred-oak overlay to keep the fruit from being too jammy. A sleek and sophisticated Cab-Merlot blend, it’s mouthfilling and smooth, with brambly, lush blackberry aromas wafting from the nose. Aged in new French oak for 18 months; 29,900 bottles made. Editors’ Choice. —D.M.  — D.T.  (4/1/2003)

Pride Mountain 2000 Petite Sirah (Napa Valley)

  1. $40
Another tasting panel favorite, this is a big, extracted wine, but far from clumsy. The plush, jammy flavors include cherry, blackberry, vanilla, coffeebean and spice; the wine feels round and powerful in the mouth. It never loses sight of elegance and finesse. .  — W.E.  (4/1/2003)

Rockland 2000 Petite Sirah (Napa Valley)

  1. $30
An exquisite Napa wine, filled with strong, rich flavors of blackberries, raspberries, orange peel and cherries, as well as funkier notes of leather, soy and smoke. Flashy and full-bodied but dry, with rich tannins and a long, spicy finish.  — W.E.  (4/1/2003)

Bodegas Julián Chivite 2000 Coleccion 125 Reserva Red (Navarra)

On par with Chivite’s other Reservas, but this infant just isn’t talking much quite yet. Nuances of black pepper, plum and oak play on the nose. Rich mouthfeel; juicy red berry and earth flavors peeking from the palate. Wake this one up 2005–2015.  — W.E.  (4/1/2003)

Bodegas Julián Chivite 1999 Coleccion 125 Reserva Red (Navarra)

  1. $46
A juicy, plump wine, but still two-plus years away from its peak, the 1999’s palate and nose are brimming with fleshy, juicy plum and blackberry flavors—even a little red fruit. Nose beguiles with fat fruit and a little spice. Drink 2005–2015.  — W.E.  (4/1/2003)

Bodegas Julián Chivite 2000 Colección 125 Chardonnay (Navarra)

  1. $50
Offers mealy, white-peach and melon notes from beginning to end. Mouthfeel is full and rich, even custardy, and turns powdery on the long finish. Comprised of three different Chardonnay clones. Hold 1–2 years.  — W.E.  (4/1/2003)

Beni di Batasiolo 1998 Vigneto Cerequio Nebbiolo (Barolo)

  1. $63
Like the other Batasiolo Barolos we tasted, the tannins in this wine are soft, making it approachable within the next few years. Leather and red earth notes are layered over a base of red plums, finishing with a touch of anise.  — W.E.  (4/1/2003)
