The 2010 vintage brings a substantial boost in price for the Alchemist Pinot, along with a significant drop in alcohol. It still represents good value, with plenty of grip and depth. The strawberry fruit is entwined with an herbal note that suggests thistle, both in good proportion. An interesting bottle.

Alchemist is a new offering from the Union Wine Company, producers of the Kings Ridge wines. Chewy and complex, the Alchemist Pinot weaves together cherry fruit, graphite, tomato leaf and rich loam, finishing with a hint of bitter baker’s chocolate.

Given its modest price and weighty alcohol, this wine should find many admirers. Thick and tannic, it could pass for a heavier red than Pinot Noir, and it offers bulky, rustic fruit flavors, with some heat on the finish.
