Angove’s deserves credit for its effort to step up the quality of its wines in the Vineyard Select series. The 2007 Shiraz is a medium-bodied, reasonably structured example of McLaren Vale fruit, balancing bright raspberry and cherry fruit against savory notes of cedar and black olive. Drink 2012–2018.

Smooth, chewy tannins on the palate with ripe red fruit flavors (plum, cherry, raspberry) are a tasty, winning combination. The sweet accents on the nose (caramel, sweet tart, toffee) may appeal more to others than they did me—still, the quibble is a minor one.

This is a substantial Shiraz, sure to please everyone at your next dinner party. Black cherry and raspberry aromas take on wheat flour and amaretto accents, with just the black cherry and flour notes galloping through the medium-length finish. Imported by Empson (USA) Ltd.

A conservative, buttoned-up wine: It has a rigid core of black fruit, with graham cracker and oak accents. It has a nice fatness in midpalate, and smooths out into a juicy finish. A very good wine, and one that won't break the bank.

The 900 cases produced of this wine are all destined for the U.S., as consumer acceptance of Australian Riesling seems to be expanding. It’s an intensely citrusy wine, dominated by limes and oranges, filled with bold, crisp flavors. Medium-bodied, with a clean finish, this would go well with many fish preparations.

From a single McLaren Vale vineyard, this is fermented in old-fashioned open-top cement vats, then aged 18 months in American oak. It’s a spicy Shiraz, filled with clove, star anise and meaty notes, but backed by plum and cassis flavors that roll out luxuriously across the palate.

A strong effort from Angove’s, the 2006 Vineyard Select Cab boasts Coonawarra’s trademark mintiness, allied to black cherry and cassis and backed by plenty of cinnamon and clove. This medium- to full-bodied red’s plentiful but soft tannins make it a natural with steak. Imported by Trinchero Vineyards.

Has a round, custardy mouthfeel that says Chardonnay, but flavors that may remind you more of Sauvignon Blanc. Zesty citrus and mineral notes foil modest yellow fruit on the palate, with white pepper notes brightening up the nose and finish.
