Dramatic all around. Deeply aromatic, offering waves of grilled blackberries, currants, violets, sweet buttered cinnamon toast and sandalwood. The tannin structure is superb. Feels classically dense and full-bodied in the mouth, very dry, yet opulent and complex. Grows more concentrated as it airs in the glass. A tremendous wine that needs time. 2012–2020.

Rich, dusty cocoa, blackcurrant, cherry aromas. Very rich, ripe, pure. Fabulously soft and smooth in the mouth, complex. Rich, sweet tannins. Dry and rich, with a very long, satisfying finish. Now-2020.

Firm, ripe tannic structure provides a nice framework for this classy wine. Blackberry, cassis, herb, tobacco and chocolate are also at the fore. From mountainside vineyards, its angular yet powdery tannins should soften within a year or two.

Lovely cherry and herb aromas, a faint perfume of prunes and raisins, but not out of balance. Drinks very sweet in cherry and mocha fruit. Perfect now, soft, gentle, supple, complex. Lovely cassis finish, dry, pure.

Young, dark, and smells hard and unyielding. Oak, black stone fruits and berries. Very extracted, jammy and acidic. Sweet in fruit and oak. Somewhat astringent. Needs time, or extensive decanting.

Here’s a rich wine that just drips with ripe Cabernet flavors. Blackcurrants, cherries, dried herbs and unsweetened chocolate are enriched with spicy, smoky notes from oak. This wine is fully dry and very balanced, and the rather rough tannins suggest a well-marbled steak. From Jess Jackson.

Not half the wine of the remarkable '97. Smells oaky and of black cherries. Taste of dried herbs, cherries, coffee. Dry, with a chunky, chewy mouhtfeel and unresolved, awkward tannins. Shows some elegance and finesse. Probably best now-2008.
