B Cellars 2009 Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Oakville)

  1. $165
An outstanding Cabernet that shows its pedigreed origin in every respect. The aroma is profound with black currants, flavors deep and concentrated, and tannins as smooth and complex as Napa can produce. So beautiful now, it’s hard to resist drinking it, but this lovely wine should improve for a decade, slowly developing in the bottle.  — S.H.  (5/1/2013)

B Cellars 2009 Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (St. Helena)

  1. $145
This Dr. Crane vineyard has really rocked in recent vintages. Enormously rich and deep, with a fabulous compaction of black currant, dark chocolate, baking spice and cedar flavors. There’s an interesting grilled meatiness, like the charred fat on a great steak, and lots of new oak, but it’s perfectly integrated. The smoky, toasty barrel notes are perfect companions…  — S.H.  (5/1/2013)

B Cellars 2004 Blend 25 Cabernet Sauvignon-Syrah Red (Napa Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $48
Only the second vintage for this wine, but it joins the top ranks of Cabernet-Syrah blends. Dry, rich, smooth and frankly delicious, it has incredibly complex flavors, of blackberries, violets, coffee, pomegranates, cola, cloves and oak, and a long finish. A terrific wine to drink now and over the next four years.  — S.H.  (10/1/2007)

Tough and gritty in tannins, with a furry astringency, and very dry. Not ready to drink now, but shows its pedigree in the unusually refined blackberry, black currant and dark chocolate fruit flavors that are deep and long lasting in the aftertaste. Feels lush and smooth. Give it a good six years in the cellar and try again.  — S.H.  (12/15/2011)

B Cellars 2009 Blend 26 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

This wine showcases everything great about Napa Valley Cabernet. It’s dry, smoothly tannic and awesomely rich, offering tiers of black currants, licorice, dark chocolate, cedar and baking spice flavors. The texture is pure, fine and satiny. Just a joy to drink now, but will develop bottle nuance over the next decade.  — S.H.  (5/1/2013)

B Cellars 2004 Blend 26 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

The grapes come from three vineyards: Georges III in Rutherford, Tokalon in Oakville and Stagecoach, up on Atlas Peak. That helps explain the wine’s beauty. It’s pure California, cult-style Cab, soft and generous, with voluptuously ripe black currant and black cherry flavors elaborately enriched with spicy, smoky, 100% new French oak. My only quibble is that it…  — S.H.  (12/31/2007)

B Cellars 2006 Georges III Cabernet Sauvignon (Rutherford)

A classic example of a young, sweetly fruity and very refined Napa Cab that needs some time in the cellar. Polished and lovely, with finely ripe tannins and decadently good flavors of blackberries, black cherries, chocolate, currants and oak. The palate’s enjoyment is interfered with by the astringency. Give it until 2012 to begin to come around.  — S.H.  (2/1/2010)

A low-production blend of various vineyards, this could be the poster child for classic, drink-me Napa Cabernet. It’s dry, smooth but rich in tannins, and enormously flavorful in blackberries, blueberries and currants. Oak, of course, plays a vital role. Upscale and impressive, it’s a fine Cabernet for drinking now and over the next eight years.  — S.H.  (12/15/2011)
