Baron De Ley 2005 7 Viñas Reserva Red (Rioja)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $68
Dense from the start, with ripe berry, plum and a pinch of lemon peel on a studly bouquet. This is a healthy, vibrant, modern wine with lots of life and balance; it’s drinkable now and will give toasty black fruit flavors and chocolaty warmth. Or age for up to another five years to gain more subtleties.  — M.S.  (12/15/2011)

  1. $28
Briary, spicy and complex on the nose, with hints of tomato adding earth tones to red berry aromas. Zesty and vivacious in the mouth, with all the raspberry, dill, vanilla and tanned leather that a fine Rioja should deliver. Rock solid and driving; one of the best wines yet from Baron de Ley; drink now through 2015.  — M.S.  (7/1/2011)

Baron De Ley 2004 Finca Monasterio Red (Rioja)

  1. $42
It has taken this bodega a few years to get it right, but in 2004 this blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Cabernet is dark and rocking. The nose offers that modern but increasingly familiar blast of bacon, baked fruit pastry and leather, and the palate works its magic with black plum and smoked game flavors. If it were just a touch longer and richer toward the finish…  — M.S.  (9/1/2007)

Baron De Ley 2005 Gran Reserva Tempranillo (Rioja)

  1. $45
Quite earthy and nutty on the nose, this features scents of leather, peanut, licorice and raisin. The mouthfeel is smooth, steady and layered, with dry plum, raspberry and plenty of spice and toast. It turns mostly toward tobacco and vanilla on the finish. Very nice and friendly; drink now–2017.  — M.S.  (2/1/2013)

Baron De Ley 2004 7 Viñas Reserva Red (Rioja)

  1. $68
A rich, more modern type of Rioja with dark color, slightly raisiny berry aromas and molasses, vanilla and mocha on the nose. The palate is full and chewy, with cola, fig and wild berry flavors. Stylish and creamy on the finish, and very pleasant as a whole. 55% Tempranillo with four other grapes blended in, including Graciano and Garnacha.  — M.S.  (10/1/2010)

Baron De Ley 2004 Grand Reserva Red (Rioja)

). Initially it smells rooty and roasted, with coffee, tobacco, dried berry and foresty aromas. It’s classic in the mouth, with fine aged tannins and zesty acids pushing tomato, dill, tobacco and light plum flavors. Finishes with elegance and length. Drink now through 2016.  — M.S.  (10/1/2011)

Baron De Ley 2001 7 Viñas Reserva Red (Rioja)

  1. $69
Deep in color for an ’01, with sweet aromas of vanilla, tobacco, leather and hickory. The palate is endowed with big berry fruit and flavors directed by wood spice, and the tannic level is just right given the wine’s midterm age. With licorice, resin and additional hickory on the finish, 7 Viñas (vineyards) is one of Baron de Ley’s better efforts.  — M.S.  (12/15/2008)

  1. $20
Smooth on the nose, with aromas of buttery oak, floral hints and lightly baked berry fruit. Maintains freshness and clarity on the palate, which has good weight and true flavors of dill, cherry and dried berries. Hits the spot despite being a bit oaky.  — M.S.  (12/15/2011)
