Despite the buzz over Syrah in Washington, with more than 40 wineries making at least a few hundred cases, there is little to choose from under $20. This is very light and pleasant, with superficial cherry flavors and a whiff of toasty oak at the end.

An easy quaffer, not that dissimilar from a light-bodied Australian Shiraz. Candied berry and vanilla fruit, smooth mouthfeel and a hint of herbs make this a nice summer-weight Syrah that you could even serve slightly chilled, à la Beaujolais.
