Benjamin Romeo 2006 La Viña de Andres Romeo Tempranillo (Rioja)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $166
Huge wine with sweetness and smooth qualities from head to toe. Aromas of mint leaf, pastry and sweet black fruits are magnetic, while the lush, layered palate is complete and packed with berry fruit, toast, fudge and tobacco flavors. Layered and deep on the finish, with cola, herbs and licorice notes. Beautiful wine. Drinkable now and good through 2013.  — M.S.  (2/1/2010)

Benjamin Romeo 2006 La Cueva del Contador Tempranillo (Rioja)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $103
Starts with the scent of beef on the grill, and then folds in black fruit and fine aged cheese. The palate is as rich and smooth as a silk throw, while flavors of berry, cassis, herbs and coffee cover the bases. Mildly balsamic on the finish, yet not complicated, demanding or overly complex. Drink now through 2012.  — M.S.  (2/1/2010)

Benjamin Romeo 2004 Qué Bonito Cacareaba White (Rioja)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $74
Benjamin Romeo makes nothing but big, idiosyncratic wines. And some are big hits while others may not be your thing. This modern, round, polished blend is creamy and smooth but also loaded with almond, pear, citrus and toast flavors. Certainly there’s a strong wood element, but it handles it with aplomb and oozes class. Drink as soon as possible. It won’t age much…  — M.S.  (9/1/2007)

Benjamin Romeo 2001 La Viña de Andres Romeo Tempranillo (Rioja)

  1. $140
Here’s another full-force Tempranillo made in the modern style. The fruit is from older vines, and the oak regimen lasted 20 months. The nose features a mix of tree fruits along with earth and wood, and the palate is round and tannic, with a fairly thin midsection and a sweet finish of marzipan, coffee and plum.  — M.S.  (9/1/2004)

Benjamin Romeo 2003 La Viña de Andres Romeo Tempranillo (Rioja)

  1. $157
Given the prices of Benjamin Romeo's wines, one should expect more. His Cueva del Contador isn't that impressive, and while this wine is better it's still a bit flat and raisiny, with molasses and a stewed black-cherry character. Romeo's wines just don't seem on the ball.  — M.S.  (2/1/2007)

Benjamin Romeo 2006 Predicador Tempranillo (Rioja)

  1. $37
Dark purple in color, with can’t-miss aromas of prune and raisin. The palate is predictably soft, with manageable heft but low acidity and thus very soft edges. Flavors of baked black fruits are warm but short, and the oak is plentiful. A little too ripe and raisiny to rate higher.  — M.S.  (2/1/2010)

Benjamin Romeo 2003 La Cueva del Contador Tempranillo (Rioja)

After a rough, almost chemical nose, the palate holds onto a personality that's overly sour. Rarely do you find such a tangy, tart wine in this price range. In its defense, airing and time serve it better. But we wouldn't expect you to drop a hundred and wait that long for something special that's not going to come.  — M.S.  (2/1/2007)
