It doesn’t take a great brain to figure out that this is a rocking, beautifully crafted international red wine. Mint, spice and chocolate aromas are dipped in lovely new oak, while the palate is all about bold plum backed by coffee and mocha. Stellar now and shows all signs of a wine that will only get better. Bodega Noemía de Patagonia 2010 Malbec (Río Negro Valley)

Get prepared for another star wine from this Patagonian winery. Fresh berry, graphite, cola and toasty aromas lead to a big and smooth palate with supercharged black fruit, herb, toast and mocha flavors. It’s spicy, dry, balanced and not the least bit out of shape. No matter how you cut it, this is an excellent Argentine Malbec to drink now through 2020.  — M.S.  (5/1/2013)

Bodega Noemía de Patagonia 2002 Noemía Malbec (Río Negro Valley)

  1. $140
Exotic and refined, with a stately bouquet of violets, mineral and cassis. Sensational quality for a wine from rugged Patagonia. It bursts with black raspberry propelled by firm acids. Then it folds back into a darker space, where fudge and pepper notes make for a warming, spicy finish. Shows off the skill of Danish winemaker Hans Vinding-Diers.  — M.S.  (7/1/2005)

Noemía’s signature Malbec, now in its third vintage, is one of the country’s best. It starts out herbal and smoky, with a lot of dark French oak. The mouth is powerful and pure, with at least three layers of complex flavors and textures. The fruit is both subtle and loud. Simply an excellent wine of world-class character. Best in 2008–09.  — M.S.  (12/15/2006)

As always, Noemía is proof that excellent Malbec can come from Patagonia. Big, bold and smoky on the nose, with blackberry and bacon. The palate is broad and bulky but balanced, while flavors of smoked meats, black fruits, licorice and especially clove stand out. Dark with a persistent clove note on the finish. Best now through 2012.  — M.S.  (12/31/2009)

Bodega Noemía de Patagonia 2009 J. Alberto Malbec (Río Negro Valley)

  1. $45
A savory and smoky wine that impresses with its licorice, spice and bacon aromas along with corpulence and length. There’s more than enough oak here, but the sandalwood, mocha and wood-driven spice notes blend into the wine’s big-berry fabric rather than dominate. Overall there’s fine balance, black fruit essence, depth of flavor and a long, toasty finish. 1,800…  — M.S.  (12/31/2010)

Bodega Noemía de Patagonia 2009 Malbec (Patagonia)

  1. $128
A dynamite Malbec with heavy oak and the structure and foundation to match it. Lemon, hickory, leather, marzipan and black fruit aromas are powerful. In the mouth, tannins and extract create a vise grip to frame concentrated blackberry, coconut, pepper and lemon peel flavors. Layered and woody on the finish. Drink from 2012 through 2016.  — M.S.  (12/31/2011)

Not a hair is out of place on this pure and potent Malbec. The bouquet is crusty and rich, with berry and bitter chocolate aromas. The palate is chock-full of mulberry, black cherry, nutmeg and cocoa powder; the finish is smooth and rewarding. Good through 2008.  — M.S.  (12/15/2006)
