Bodegas Mähler-Besse 2005 Taja Excelecia Red (Jumilla)

  1. $23
Super smooth and complete on the nose, with black fruit, toasty oak and earth notes rolled into a nice whole. It’s lush, plump and balanced, with full blackberry, raisin, chocolate and spice flavors resting in front of a mellow, spicy finish. A pretty, balanced blend of 75% Tempranillo and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon that shows Jumilla at its best.  — M.S.  (12/15/2010)

Toro is not usually a prime hunting ground for Best Buys, but this full-throttle wine is solid, gritty and tastes and smells nice. The nose is full, mildly raisiny and dusty, while the palate tastes of cola, raspberry, cherry and toast. Rubbery and long on the finish.  — M.S.  (4/1/2010)

Bodegas Mähler-Besse 2005 Taja Reserva Red (Jumilla)

A touch raisiny and sweet from nose to tail, but what’s in between is convincing for Jumilla. Aromas of licorice and herbs are sweet but nice, while the flavors or raisin and blackberry are chunky, with a basic finish that’s a little flat but definitely ripe. A blend of Monastrell, Cabernet, Tempranillo and Merlot that’s ready to drink.  — M.S.  (12/15/2010)

Bodegas Mähler-Besse 2007 Taja Monastrell (Jumilla)

Big and bold stuff from southern Spain with burnt, hot aromas of roasted black fruits and stems. Better on the palate, where it brings plum and berry flavors but also some heat and saline. Slightly stemmy and roasted on the finish, much like the bouquet.  — M.S.  (8/1/2010)
