A medium-intensity example of a well-made wine that doesn’t overpower or isn’t overoaked. Rose petal, brick dust, leather and vanilla aromas set up a mostly fresh palate with plum, berry and herbal flavors. Shows some barrel spice and sweetness on the finish. Right there for $20.

Dry, spicy and earthy on the nose, with Boston baked bean aromas and candied berry fruit notes. The palate has good spunk and life to it, while the flavors of berry fruit are controlled and modest but heavily spiced. Finishes with cinnamon, nutmeg and fruit cake notes along with a final wave of balancing acidity. Drink now.

Solid up front, with sweet and spicy aromas of plum, vanilla and candied berry. Feels full and good, with weight and thickness boosting up toasty, woody berry flavors. Dries out on the finish, leaving spice and a resiny taste. Drink now through 2014.

Somewhat neutral on the nose, with light cherry and raspberry aromas. Solid in the mouth, with slightly clacky tannins and flavors of earthy red fruits, light oak and earth. Just ripe and racy enough on the finish, with a calm, reserved personality.

Mature smelling, with citrus peel, tobacco and molasses on the nose. The palate is a bit lean and acidic 10 years after harvest, with little expansiveness and driving, citrusy flavors of raspberry and red plum. Juicy but clampy on the finish.

Spicy and jumpy on the nose, with pine and juniper notes coming alongside more normal berry and cherry scents. The palate has a severe snappy, citrusy, narrow feel and flavors of cherry, red plum and cherry tomato. Lightly herbal and oaky on the finish, with good length.

Quite drinkable now, this is a pleasant medium-weight wine from a respected vintage, at a nice price. Aromatically, it wears a lot of sweet American oak on its cherry fruit, rather enjoyably so. The flavors are solid, if not terribly refined, with dark-cherry and leather notes. The wood is perhaps a little weighty at the end, but the wine stays quite drinkable.

Opens with a warm, baked nose of raisin, roasted plum and tobacco. The palate is scouring and crisp due to sharp acids, and thus the flavors follow suit in that they’re lean and tart and focus on pie cherry and red plum. Lean, zesty and lively Rioja to drink now.
