Bodegas Palacio 2001 Glorioso Reserva Tempranillo (Rioja)

No complaints—just praise for this clean, easy red from a great vintage. The nose is crisp and fruity, with welcome citrus and wood notes. Blackberry mixed with vanilla and chocolate create a pleasant palate, while the finish is round and tinged by mocha.  — M.S.  (11/1/2006)

Opens with earth, tobacco, briar and nutty aromas. This is now aged to its best state, and while there’s still some tannic bite, it’s at a straightforward, mature place. Flavors of roasted plum and spice are classy, and the finish is reflective of a fine vintage. Drink now or in the near future.  — M.S.  (8/1/2010)

Dense and roasted on the nose, with tobacco, leather, mild herbal notes and blackberry fruit. The palate is packed but a little bulky, with smacking flavors of plum, blackberry, pepper and herbs. Finishes with leather and heat. Drink now through 2014.  — M.S.  (7/1/2011)

Bodegas Palacio 2008 Cosme Palacio 1894 Blanco White (Rioja)

  1. $50
Heavy, oily and well oaked, but also elegant, elevated and something out of the ordinary. This is barrel-fermented Viura at a high quality level; it’s smooth, creamy and lifted but also acid-rich and lemony, with notes of toast, vanilla, melon and wood resin. A potentially fine wine to drink now with baked or sautéed fish.  — M.S.  (7/1/2011)

Bodegas Palacio 2004 Cosme Palacio y Hermanos Reserva Tempranillo (Rioja)

  1. $30
A solid, serious Rioja reserva with licorice, leather, char and good berry aromas. The palate is juicy, pure and tastes of clean black cherry and cola flavors. Picks up steam as it opens up, and then finishes with a light butter streak and proper weight. No complaints; almost makes the upper echelon. Drink now through 2012.  — M.S.  (2/1/2010)

Toasty, earthy, chocolaty and meaty, but not overly fruity or sweet. The palate features solid structure and body, with rooty raspberry, plum, nutmeg and other spice-based flavors. A little rough and short on the finish, with firm tannins. Gets better the longer it sits, so decant or let breathe before pouring.  — M.S.  (8/1/2010)

Bodegas Palacio 2006 Glorioso Reserva Especial Tempranillo (Rioja)

Dark and rubbery at first, with cheesy, leathery aromas that settle on classic dried fruit and vanilla. The palate is medium in weight, with tomatoey plum, earth and finally chocolate flavors. Turns toward coffee on the finish.  — M.S.  (12/15/2011)

Bodegas Palacio 2006 Cosme Palacio Reserva Tempranillo (Rioja)

Smoky and dark, with aromas of salami, rubber, baking spices and prune. In the mouth, it’s full of brightening acids while the flavors of blackberry, black cherry and coffee yield to raisin and burnt toast on the finish. Very nice Rioja but with a touch of excess ripeness and raisin character.  — M.S.  (7/1/2011)
