Borgo Pretale 1998 Borgato Sangiovese (Colli della Toscana Centrale)

  1. $50
Surprising to see a ’98 coming onto the market now, but the wine is fine, raring and ready to go. Cola, charcoal and sliced lemon carry the nose into a tangy, cherry-laden palate. The finish is long and liqueur-like. Some gritty tannins call out for food.  — M.S.  (11/15/2004)

Borgo Pretale 1998 Riserva Sangiovese (Chianti Classico)

  1. $22
Not sure why this wine outperforms the ’99, but it does. The nose has some caramel and toffee, but also some leather and dried fruit. Snappy on the tongue, with light cherry and raspberry flavors. Drying but clean on the finish.  — W.E.  (4/1/2005)

Borgo Pretale 1999 Sangiovese (Chianti Classico)

  1. $17
Long gone; nothing here but acid and tannin. Think old Rioja, but without any sweet, leathery complexity.  — W.E.  (4/1/2005)

Borgo Pretale 1999 Riserva Sangiovese (Chianti Classico)

  1. $22
Weedy and sour, with grapefruit-like aromas and flavors. Out of whack.  — W.E.  (4/1/2005)
