Braren Pauli 1999 Roar Vineyard Pinot Noir (Mendocino)

  1. $14
Begins with cooked aromas of berries steeped in coffee and rum, with stewed tomato notes, and drinks heavy and thick, although the flavors are ripe and sweet. Good acids set off the semi-sweet fruit. Flavorful, but can be faulted for lacking the delicacy Pinot Noir should have. —S.H.  — S.H.  (5/1/2002)

Braren Pauli 1999 Frost Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Mendocino)

  1. $16
Hate to say it, but this is the kind of wine Mendocino is struggling to leave behind. It’s rough and earthy, and seems simultaneously underripe and overripe. Dry, with good tannins, it’s not going anywhere. —S.H.  — S.H.  (5/1/2002)

Braren Pauli 1999 Busch Creek Vineyard Chardonnay (Mendocino County)

  1. $12
Opens with apple and peach aromas and a funky, off-note that bothers. The flavors are spare and common. This rather tart wine is dry, with high acidity. Finishes with an earthiness. —S.H.  — S.H.  (5/1/2002)

Braren Pauli 1998 Merlot (Redwood Valley)

  1. $14
Struggles to drum up some interest, but it’s hard to get excited. The wine has hot, cardboardy aromas of stewed prunes and mushrooms, and diluted berry flavors dominated by the heat of alcohol. It’s pretty common stuff, but acceptable. —S.H.  — S.H.  (5/1/2002)
