Caliterra

The Eduardo Chadwick family originally created Caliterra in 1989 as a side project to the family-owned Viña Errazuriz of Chile. However, Caliterra Winery was officially founded in 1996 as a partnership between the Robert G. Mondavi family and Viña Errázuriz. Their shared vision for Caliterra Vineyards was to produce high quality wines that reflect the potential of the Chilean nature, terroir and fruit. Located in the heart of the Colchagua Valley, the Caliterra Estate encompasses over 2,600 acres of land boasting a Mediterranean climate, where cool nights and gentle breezes help to create concentrated and balanced wines. The main plantings here include Merlot, Carmenere, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and smaller lots of Malbec according to our Caliterra wine reviews. While Caliterra wines are also produced using Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, it is their Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere blends that receive the highest accolades in both their value and higher end lines of wine. Our Caliterra wine ratings indicate that in 2004 Viña Errázuriz acquired the Robert Mondavi family’s 50% share in Caliterra. Check out our Caliterra online wine guide below to see which of these wines is right for you.

Caliterra 2005 Cenit Red (Colchagua Valley)

  1. $75
Deep and earthy, with aromas of black fruits, shoe polish and tobacco. Cenit means the “highest point in the sky,” and this blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Malbec and 10% Petit Verdot is the highest point to date reached by Caliterra. It’s a full wine with fine acidity, cassis and blackberry flavors, and chocolate and smoked meat on the finish.  — M.S.  (11/15/2008)

Caliterra 2008 Tributo Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Colchagua Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $20
Dusty, sweet, dark-fruited and properly herbal, this is a Cabernet that very much fits the Chilean blueprint of what the variety should smell and taste like. Creamy and full, with bold berry, herb and vanilla flavors, and then with a lush, dense finish. Drink now through 2012.  — M.S.  (12/1/2010)

Caliterra 2006 Tributo Edicion Limitada Carmenère-Malbec Red (Colchagua Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $30
Very nicely done, with full-force berry and plum balancing off mild vegetal/herbal aromas. The palate is ripe, round and textured, with alluring plum, berry, leather and vanilla flavors. It folds in cinnamon and pepper on the finish to bring everything full circle, while keeping the herbal element under control; 60% Carmenère and 40% Malbec.  — M.S.  (11/15/2008)

Caliterra 2005 Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon (Colchagua Valley)

  • Best Buy
  1. $11
Plenty of barrel-driven coffee and mocha aromas set the stage for cassis, black cherry and vanilla flavors. Feelwise, this is a moderately tight, structured wine with persistence and power. The finish, meanwhile, is chocolaty and stout. It’s yet another well-priced ’05 Cabernet out of Chile.  — M.S.  (3/1/2007)

Caliterra 1997 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Maipo Valley)

  • Best Buy
  1. $13
This spends a full year in American oak, and now it is smooth as can be. Blackberry and minty aromas, and a whiff of eucalyptus. A striking structure and full tannins. Quite creamy in terms of mouthfeel, and tasty. Best Buy.  — M.S.  (12/1/1999)

Caliterra 2001 Chardonnay (Central Valley)

  • Best Buy
  1. $8
What’s so nice about this wine is that it doesn’t get in your face with an excess of everything. Modulated apple and peach flavors are treated with just the right dose of lees and oak, while bright acids provide needed crispness. It has an elegance that belies the giveaway price.  — S.H.  (12/1/2002)

Caliterra 2004 Tribute Shiraz (Colchagua Valley)

  1. $17
Bold and dark, with perfume galore on the nose. The palate is sweet and rich, a little bit creamy, and loaded with zest. For Chilean Shiraz this is quite good; the finish is flush and offers enough acidity to keep it dancing.  — M.S.  (10/1/2006)

Caliterra 2004 Tribute Malbec (Colchagua Valley)

  1. $17
Jammy blueberry aromas get it going in a good direction, and overall the wine is solid and friendly. Blackberry, plum and cassis grace the palate, backed by toast and chocolate on the finish. With firm, lively acidity the wine almost jumps from the glass.  — M.S.  (10/1/2006)
