Chanticleer 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

A complex wine, brimming with cinnamon and spice flavors and redolent of coffee, chocolate, black cherry, black currant, raspberry, herb and anise flavors. The tannins are firm but ripe, and the finish is quite long. A first release from winemaker Chris Dearden.

Bone dry and crisp in acidity, with rich red cherry and sandalwood flavors. Kind of a Napa-style Chianti that’s direct and polished. Not an ager, but good with a beef and pasta dish with plenty of black pepper and shaved parmesan.

Quite good and delicious, if not particularly “Yountvilly.” It’s soft, lush and super-ripe, front-loaded with black cherries, chocolate, vanilla, caramel and smoke. Could be mistaken for a Paso Robles wine. Ready now.
