Château Cos d'Estournel 2005 Red (Saint-Estèphe)

  1. $250
Saint-Estèphe has a reputation for tannins, and this 2005 Cos lives up to that. But it does much more, because the tannins add richness along with intensely ripe black fruits, dark plums and figs. The dense tannins are finely balanced with fresh acidity, and a long-lasting aftertaste. Impressive.  — R.V.  (6/1/2008)

96-98 Barrel sample. All the right elements are here. The wine is powerful, but has a wonderful lift of fresh fruit, spiced with wood but never too much. The tannins are sweet, ripe and delicious. It shows both gorgeous fruit and a dense structure.  — R.V.  (12/31/2009)

95-97 Barrel sample. A hugely dense wine, packed with fruit tannins, with only a touch of wood showing through. There's a touch of peppermint, too. Firm and solid; a real blockbuster .  — R.V.  (6/20/2006)

95-97 Huge tannins, a wine that is so concentrated and structured. The fruit is rich, with the acidity giving just enough freshness. It's a formidable wine, a huge mouthful of dense tannin and the ripest fruit.  — R.V.  (6/25/2011)

Château Cos d'Estournel 2003 Red (Saint-Estèphe)

  1. $150
With its aromas of new wood, spice and black fruits, this promises from the start to be a powerful, polished wine. It is dense, very ripe (from the high percentage of Merlot in the blend), but still packed with tannins. It’s a massive wine, bringing together the heat of 2003 with the big tannins of Saint-Estèphe. Imported by Diageo Chateau & Estates.  — R.V.  (5/1/2006)

Château Cos d'Estournel 2006 Red (Saint-Estèphe)

Cos d’Estournel has softened those austere Saint-Estèphe tannins and produced a wine that is all opulence and roundness. The tannins are certainly there, but they come through as big, bold richness. The power suggests it will age well, but for drinking earlier, the freshness of the sweet homemade plum jam promises well.  — R.V.  (3/1/2009)

Château Cos d'Estournel 2007 Red (Saint-Estèphe)

  1. $120
With its perfumed aromas, this is a wine that has richness and sweetness, with soft velvet power. It has an intense wood element that needs to blend into the rest of the wine, but the sweet black currant and freshness provide a good balance. This is a seductive wine, with a fine solid character.  — R.V.  (4/1/2010)

Château Cos d'Estournel 2009 Barrel sample Red (Saint-Estèphe)

94-96 Barrel sample. A hugely rich wine, where the tannins seem initially lost in the overwhelming fruit. It has power and concentration, showing its alcohol a little. There is great intensity, but an edge of Portiness from the super-rich fruit.  — R.V.  (8/9/2010)
