91-93 Barrel sample. If you're looking for great, ripe black currant fruits, this is where to come. The wine is full and hugely fruity, but it still manages a good Bordeaux sense of proportion.

A densely textured wine, but one with the weight of fruit to sustain the dry core. It is sold, chunky, pulling black berry fruits and plum skins into a good mélange of flavors. It will soften, but will always remain on the firm side. Age for 3–4 years.

The Miailhe family, owners of Coufran also have Château Siran in Margaux in their portfolio. Coufran 2004 is structured, with dusty tannins, but over the rounded, smooth, almost jammy fruits, an accessible wine, showing good fresh acidity to finish.

In the far north of the Haut-Médoc, Château Coufran is under the same ownership as Verdigan. It has perhaps a more austere character than its stablemate, with also more potential for aging. The fruit is structured and solid, a very textured wine.

88–90. Barrel sample. This dry wine is balanced by a dark concentration of juicy fruit. It has enough density of both black fruit and dry tannins to promise good aging.
