This wild yeast wine has emerged as one of CaliforniaÕs most consistently interesting and concentrated Chards. The dense overlay of oak doesnÕt just mask watery fruit. These spicy, peachy flavors are massive. Waves of palate sensations roll over the tongue, even in this weak vintage. The wine is also an ager.

Made from the estate vineyard high up on Mount Veeder, the wine has a brilliant intensity and near-perfect balance. It’s big, but not in the usual California style. Rather, it maintains an elegantly supple and wonderfully balanced character. The taste is of mineral-inspired tropical fruits, complexed with Burgundian technique.

For years Chateau Potelle has been turning out tremendous, bracing Chardonnays. The ’06 VGS is an awesomely powerful wine, focused like a laser with well-oaked pineapple, passionfruit, tangerine and apricot flavors that are balanced with crisp acids. Notable for purity and strength, this Chardonnay will drink well over the next 6 years.

A worthy successor to the ’04, Potelle’s latest Syrah is a monumental wine. It’s decadently good now in its youth, with soft tannins that frame massive black currant, mocha, olive tapenade, grilled meat and crushed black pepper flavors that go on and on through the spicy finish. But 6 or more years of cellaring will see this wine evolve in interesting and possibly…

Has the lean and tight structure of a mountain wine, with crisp acids framing citrus and peach flavors, but it’s also notable for its creamy, lush texture and rich finish. This wine changes constantly in the glass and should improve with age through 2005.

This huge wine captures the essence of mountain fruit. Dense and concentrated in ripe pear, tropical fruit and spice flavors, it also oozes elaborate honey, marzipan and buttered toast from oak. Has the weight and intensity of a great white Burgundy.

Always among the most elegant and claret-like Zins, this mountain beauty seems to express the French attitude of Potelle’s owners. Graceful and harmonious despite the power: the plum, blackberry and herb flavors have been crafted into a taut, ageable wine.

This is the best Potelle Syrah I’ve ever had, but be forewarned: It’s an extraordinarily tannic wine that shows its 1,800-foot mountain origins. It clocks in at 13.9% alcohol, yet it’s bone dry. The fruit is powerfully concentrated in blackberries enhanced with sweet, smoky oak. If ever there was a Syrah for the cellar, this is it. Best now (if you like young…
