Claudia Springs 1998 Rhodes Vineyard Zinfandel (Redwood Valley)

A juicy, jammy, alcoholic style, tannic and young. This is gutsy, high-toned wine, with fat, extracted fruit. Very dry tannins, good balance. This wine needs time; it’s a very different style from the other Claudia Springs Zins. But it shows the same attention to detail, intense fruit, and stylish, sensitive winemaking.

Zin with a Pinot sensibility; it’s bright, spicy and forward. Sweet, delicious fruit, with accents of cinnamon, cardamom and anise. This is an elegant and subtle wine, but unusually long and complex, with wonderful structure. Enticing, enchanting wine.

This is the most intensely flavored and concentrated Viognier I’ve ever tasted from the U.S. It opens up fragrant and sensual, a soft, seductive blend of sweet fruits, blossoms, pollen and perfume. It explodes in the glass into a rich, vivid wine highlighted with polished fruit, concentrated aromas and lipsmacking acids. Ethereal. —P.G.

From a cool, inland section of Mendocino County, this Viognier opens with gorgeous aromatics—heavenly honeysuckle and grapefruit—and offers up crisp, dry, borderline bracing acidity that pulls back just at the right moment. Nicely textured, the finish lingers.

Claudia Springs 1998 Pinot Noir (Mendocino)

Wines like this make a strong argument for the future of Pinot Noir grown in this region. The blend includes 10 percent Pinot Meunier, which pumps up the color. It’s a spicy, plummy wonder that’s soft and ready to drink. It tastes of spiced apples and cinnamon, with a hint of violets in the smooth finish.

Tannic and firm, yet fleshy, with cherries and cherry tomatoes mixing it up. Some pleasing smoke and toast notes come from aging in oak barrels. Overall, it’s elegantly styled but still on the young and tight side.

A wonderfully dry, crisp and refreshing wine, this PG has flavors of pink grapefruit, lime and hints of tropical fruit. The bright, natural acidity makes it zesty and clean.

Claudia Springs 2001 Syrah (Mendocino)

Has a certain degree of sur-maturité to its aromas, which turned off one reviewer and turned on two others. The fruit is a bit wild and over the top with stone fruit (apricots?) and berrry flavors, but the mouthfeel is creamy and ripe, the finish long and supple.
