This classy claret puts a sophisticated spin on southern Oregon Bordeaux-blends. The roughly equal mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc has a supple power. Aromatic and sexy with scents of berry and plum, it slides into a silky, seductive midpalate and continues seamlessly through a finish that is both spicy and shows a touch of new oak.

This is estate-grown and nicely ripened, showing sweet scents and flavors of blackberry compote. Though it trends toward a jammy, high-alcohol profile, it keeps itself firm with solid, smooth tannins and enough acid to provide support. It’s more California than Oregon, with the sweet fruit and high alcohol backed with a liquor-barrel finish.

Helped by extra bottle age, this Syrah is the best of the latest releases from Cliff Creek. Balanced and varietal, its spicy berry fruit is highlighted with grapefruity phenolics. Flavors penetrate and stand up well into a medium-long, balanced finish.

Round and fruity, with a tasty mix of apples, peaches and citrus, this tastes like fruit, not barrel, and would be an excellent choice if a hearty, non-oaky white wine is called for. There’s good balance and length, with a resonant hint of minerality in the finish.

A perfumed wine with notes of green tea and sweet herbs accented by cinnamon. The cherry and cranberry aromas and flavors have started to dry out with the fruit playing second fiddle to the tart acidity and grainy tannic structure.

In contrast to the winery’s big, rough and tumble style of Merlot, this Cabernet is lightly fruity. It shows cherry and cranberry hard candy fruit flavors. The tannins are rough and substantial, and quickly take over the finish.

Half Cabernet Sauvignon with the rest Cabernet Franc and Merlot, this wine shows its age with notes of dried black cherries, currant, and prunes backed by chalky tannins.

This has plenty of cranberry and raspberry fruit flavor, supported with juicy, mouth-cleaning acidity. Beyond that, it’s a simple, food-friendly quaffer.
