Dramatically rich and smooth, with very ripe flavors of black cherries, red plums, mocha and sweet herbs, this complex wine also has supple tannins that are thick, but gentle. The finish is long and harmonious. Definitely one of the best “California” appellation reds out there.

The winery claims the wine comes from “the oldest Zinfandel vines on earth.” Certainly this is an intensely flavored, densely structured Zin. The flavors go beyond cherry, raspberry and cocoa fruit into the area of dessert pastries, with toasted pie dough and meringue. But the wine is fully dry, at the price of high alcohol, 15.4%.

Containing a little Barbera, this wine is tremendous in mocha and blackberry flavors. Wines just don’t get much more flavorful than this. It’s as rich as a fine Port, except that it’s dry, without excessive alcohol or stewed fruit. It’s also very soft.

This unusual Tempranillo-based blend, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Barbera and other grapes, is soft and easy. It has an array of berry-cherry and chocolate flavors, and a sweetish aftertaste.

Shows the briary, brambly character of Foothills Zin, with an array of wild berry, tobacco, mocha and Asian spice flavors wrapped into finely ground tannins. But the wine is too sweet and candied in the finish. Drink now.
