Striking and sincere Sauvignon Blanc. One whiff, one taste and one swish across the palate and you’ll know that this is elevated stuff. For starters, the bouquet delivers honest bell pepper, melon, passion fruit and apple aromas; and along with the fruit there’s nuance, structure and balancing herbal notes. Full, long and regal. Cono Sur 2008 20 Barrels Syrah (Limarí Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $24
This new wine from the Limarí Valley is a head-turner. The color is black but it’s not overweight or overdone. The nose has mild animal and leather notes along with savory blackberry, and the palate is full of boysenberry, dark plum, licorice, pepper, chocolate and espresso. Long and lingering, with thick legs. Drink now through 2011.  — W.E.  (2/1/2011)

Cono Sur 2008 20 Barrels Chardonnay (Casablanca Valley)

Toasty as they come, with all the French oak a wine can take and still smell good. There’s also vanilla, melon and baked apple aromas in front of a zesty, clean palate that’s packed with salty, ocean-influenced apple, pineapple and citrus flavors. Crisp as a lime on the finish, and that’s because it did not go through malolactic fermentation. Drink now.  — W.E.  (2/1/2011)

Cono Sur 2007 20 Barrels Cabernet Sauvignon (Maipo Valley)

  1. $24
A nice, powerful Cab with mocha, truffle, forest floor, cassis and vanilla aromas preceding a pretty palate of cassis, coffee and toast. The texture is just right and the finish is long and easy, with furry tannins that don’t bite. A supple wine that shows the best side of Maipo Cabernet. Drink now–2013.  — W.E.  (2/1/2011)

Cono Sur 2008 Ocio Pinot Noir (Casablanca Valley)

  1. $55
A potent powder keg of a PN with floral aromas, black cherry and toasty oak. The palate is textured but angular, with black cherry flavors, toast and acidic tang. Seems like it plays one note for a bit too long to be considered excellent, but it’s showing fine vibrancy and potential.  — W.E.  (2/1/2011)

Cono Sur 2008 Visión Carmenère (Cachapoal Valley)

  1. $14
An impressive Carmenère for the price. The nose is true to the variety, with tobacco, olive, carob and herbal aromas mixing with ripe berry aromas. It’s jammy as well as juicy, and the flavors of black cherry, plum and mocha are healthy and bright. Clean and long on the finish.  — W.E.  (2/1/2011)

Cono Sur 2004 20 Barrels Limited Edition Cabernet Sauvignon (Maipo Valley)

  1. $25
Straightforward yet enticing berry, oak and tar aromas get it off to a good start. The palate runs extremely juicy and racy, as lively acidity pushes angular cherry, cassis, berry and plum flavors. Quite bright and jumpy for Chilean Cabernet, but also quite good.  — M.S.  (11/15/2006)

Cono Sur 2005 Visión Cabernet Sauvignon (Maipo Valley)

  1. $15
A nicely made Chilean Cabernet that delivers ripe, toasty fruit-based aromas in front of tasty cassis and blackberry flavors. As for mouthfeel, it’s full and layered as it pours on the toast and vanilla shadings. Simply stated, it’s a clean, easy, fresh red wine with a bit of character.  — M.S.  (3/1/2007)
