Complex and classy Cabernet Sauvignon (with 15% Merlot) that sets a new high point for Lota. Sous-bois, cigar box, fine leather and dry cassis and cherry aromas precede a layered, smooth palate with sweet, toasted berry, currant, mocha and vanilla flavors. Finishes with obvious but restrained oak and spice. Drink now through 2014.

With dark aromas of tar, black pepper and blackberry, this presents itself well. The palate is creamy, smooth and ready, with baked, lightly raisiny flavors of black currant, blackberry and brown sugar. For sheer ripeness, this is at peak level, so drink this impressive Cabernet-Merlot blend now.

A little dense early on but airing unleashes cassis, cherry and tobacco aromas. Next in line you’ll find black cherry, chocolate and vanilla. All in all it’s a big, round and nicely balanced red. Of note, it marks the winery’s entry into the super-Chilean category, something timed to coincide with Cousiño-Macul’s 150th anniversary.

Displays a lot of Macul-driven eucalyptus on the nose, but also leather, licorice and herb aromas. The color is dark, and the structure and tannins are both firm. Tastes of powerful cassis and blackberry and shows concentration. Finishes thick, smooth and a touch syrupy. Drink now through 2014.

In this vintage, the blend is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet, and the wine is nice in the mouth, where lush red fruit spreads out comfortably. It’s a dry, full, lengthy wine that is on the heavy side now but should be perfect in another year or two. Twelve months in new French oak has provided just the right smoke and vanilla notes.

Traditional is the best way to describe this blend. It starts with tobacco and other sweet-leaf aromas, while the palate is lively and healthy, with mildly candied cherry and raspberry flavors. With hints of herbs, olive and tobacco, this comes across like a prototype Chilean red. Imported by Billington Imports, Inc.

True Maipo aromas of tobacco, eucalyptus, earth and herbal berry lead to a full and rugged palate with plenty of tannic grip and loads of black fruit, cassis and chocolate flavors. Long and more chocolaty on the finish, with a touch of medicinality.

This boisterous young Cabernet really shows the new style at Cousiño-Macul. This Cab has maple, vanilla and licorice to go with cassis, pepper and a drop of cherry cough syrup. It’s big, polished and shows integrated tannins.
