Rustic and spicy at first, and then it fills out nicely. The fruit is on the rich side, leaning more toward blackberry and Bing cherry than anything red and lean. Cuneo 2003 Pinot Noir

Firm, ripe and very solid: a chunkier, more muscular style of Pinot Noir, somewhat reminiscent of Cabernet. There’s good black cherry and boysenberry fruit, some milk chocolate and vanilla bean barrel flavors, and plenty of ripeness. Heavily oaked, with aromas of marshmallow, cherry and rubber. The palate is firm and tannic, with spicy flavors and cherry-style fruit. The finish is tart and tight, but very ripe and pure. Cuneo 2001 Del Rio Vineyard Syrah (Rogue Valley)

Price $25

Rich and extracted, with a purple color and nutty, maple-based aromas. There’s no denying the power here, and with flavors of sugar beets, smoked meats and kirsch, it’s quite the bruiser. Despite that heft, the finish is balanced, with chocolate and dried herb flavors. Some hard tannins make it a bit tough now; maybe time will tame it. — M.S. (9/1/2003)

Cuneo 2001 Two Rivers Red

This is interesting: a 55% Oregon/45% Washington Bordeaux blend from top vineyards in both states (the two rivers being the Columbia and the Rogue). I like the concept, but both the Red Mountain and the Rogue Valley fruit create similarly tough, chewy tannins, so neither side modulates the other. Very tannic and hard, it’s tough sledding. — P.G. Cuneo 2000 Ciel du Cheval Vineyard Sangiovese (Red Mountain)

Herbal and earthy, with aromas of pepper and barbecue sauce. The plum and strawberry fruit is tight and dry, while the overall impression is of a sharp, lean red that’s a bit hot and sour.
