Textbook Rioja gran reserva in every way. It’s light and smoky smelling, with brown sugar, fine cologne and cedary aromas. Generous but well-cut in the mouth, with fig, mushroom, raspberry and spiced plum flavors. Fresh on the finish, with light herb flavors and good weight. Drink now through 2018.

Concentrated but not too heavy, at least not compared to some new-age Riojanos. Asúa shows smoky, toasty aromas and some bright cherry fruit. In the mouth, she’s fresh and upright, with just a hint of Bordeaux-style leafiness but zero under ripeness. Toward the finish cola and red licorice flavors come up. Lovely and more subtle than the competition.

Perfect color; built like a house. The bouquet is telling, as one whiff delivers cherry, cola, tobacco and almond paste. Much to ponder on the palate, as red berry and cassis flavors are puffed up by woody waves of coconut and cream. And then there are those tight, driving tannins. You can’t miss them. Hold for several years, if you can. Imported by Pasternak Wine…

An old-school wine done really well. It starts with cherry, tobacco and light coconut aromas before moving on to juicy boysenberry and citrus flavors that are boosted by CUNE’s trademark acids. Muscular, wiry and structured, but with restraints. Think Barry Bonds before Balco.

The traditional side of Rioja is exhibited in the wine’s vanilla, dill and peppery aromas, but the palate shows lots of red fruit, butter and a core of perfect acidity and tannins. This is a consistent wine that doesn’t overwhelm. If you’re looking for Nuevo Classico heft, color and power, look elsewhere. Best from 2008 through 2014.

This wine reflects the great vintage and CVNE’s long-standing status as a quality Rioja winery; the final product zips along with lively blackberry and plum flavors before slowing into a smooth, mellow and lengthy finish. A blue chip wine with style and finesse.

Past vintages of Imperial Gran Reserva have seemed sharp and dilute; not the 1998, which is resolute in its delivery of cumin, root beer and subtle raspberry aromas. The palate has nice primary cherry and berry flavors, solid tannins and welcome but not overwhelming acidity. Notice a touch of dill and butter on the finish, a reflection of traditional American oak aging.

CVNE must have done a strict selection in chilly, wet 2002 to get a reserva that’s this sound. The nose is a lovely, traditional blend of earth, leather, coffee, spicy wood and red fruits. The palate follows suit, showing raspberry, strawberry, plum and vanilla flavors. A great, understated wine from what was a forgettable year for most Rioja producers.
