Domaine Marcel Deiss 2000 Huebuhl White

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $47
A wine packed with noble rot, giving richness rather than sweetness. An intoxicating blend of smokiness and almonds mixes with flavors of citrus zest and toast in this complex, concentrated wine. From the tiny Huebuhl vineyard in Bergheim. Impressive. Imported by Lauber Imports.  — R.V.  (4/1/2005)

The 12-acre Rotenberg vineyard in Wintzenheim produces vibrant, racy wines, like this blend of Riesling and Pinot Gris. It is fresh and intense, with concentrated flavors of sweet white currants. Imported by Lauber Imports.  — R.V.  (4/1/2005)

Domaine Marcel Deiss 2001 Sélection de Grains Nobles Pinot Gris

This is not so much a sweet wine (although there is plenty of marmalade flavor here) as it is hugely rich and concentrated. It is like drinking drops of nectar, with honey, dryness and ripe fruit. At this early stage in its development the richness dominates—it needs time to develop. Imported by New Castle Imports.  — R.V.  (2/1/2006)

Domaine Marcel Deiss 2000 Engelgarten Riesling

  1. $46
The Bergheim Engelgarten “Angel’s garden” vineyard has fine, gravelly soil, ideally suited for Riesling. You can taste the minerality in this rich, steely wine. It’s so fresh and so intense. Delicious flavors of white currants and acidity give it a lift. Imported by New Castle Imports.  — R.V.  (11/1/2005)

Domaine Marcel Deiss 2001 Huebuhl Pinot Gris

As is common with many of the Deiss wines, this carries no indication of varietal, just the name of the vineyard, in this case a small parcel between Bergheim and Ribeauvillé. With its sweetness and richness, this has characteristics of noble rot, but the spiciness of Pinot Gris shows through. There is also great finishing acidity. Imported by New Castle Imports.  — R.V.  (2/1/2006)

Domaine Marcel Deiss 2003 Muscat d’Alsace Bergheim

  1. $26
If you want to know what Muscat can really taste like, try this exotic, perfumed wine. Deiss conjures up flavors unusual in Alsace: violets, bergamot and pepper. Muscat is normally an apéritif, but this is more like a meal. Imported by Lauber Imports.  — R.V.  (4/1/2005)

Domaine Marcel Deiss 2002 Schoffweg White

  1. $47
A fine, poised wine, fresh and vibrant, which just demands to be drunk. Flavors of orange zest and white currants are balanced by layers of tannin and acidity. A delicious wine, packed with flavor. Imported by Lauber Imports.  — R.V.  (4/1/2005)

Domaine Marcel Deiss 2002 Altenberg de Bergheim Grand Cru White

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $95
Not labeled as late-harvest, but this wine is noticeably sweet, rich and mouthcoating. Honey, baked apple and cinnamon flavors easily glide across the palate, buttressed by just enough acidity to keep it from becoming cloying. Might be best with foie gras or cheese. Drinkable now, but should age effortlessly.  — J.C.  (8/1/2006)
