This lesser-known vineyard is the source of at least two stupendous eisweins in 2009. This one features demerara syrup and ripe peaches imbued with an incredibly lush texture, yet balanced by bright acids and a slightly briny quality on the finish.

If there is any criticism to be made of this wine, it might be that it is just too fruity. Waves of honey and tropical fruit coat the mouth, wonderfully balanced by zesty acidity, and while it is sweet and lush it never seems cloying or heavy. Delicious now–2015, at least.

The three Himmelreich ’09 spätleses tasted were all terrific, with this example showing great intensity and power without excessive weight. Apple and lime notes are underscored by something akin to liquid slate, while citrus notes linger on the long, vibrant finish.

So lush and rich, almost to the point of being over the top, this is a hugely tropical Riesling, with waves of cascading fruit. Yet there’s also a suggestion of slaty minerality and even a tinge of citrus pith reining things in on the finish. Drink it now as a dessert unto itself, or age it for a decade or more before trying it with more savory dishes.

A great value in dry Riesling, the 2010 from Dr. Heidemanns-Bergweiler displays fascinating aromas of peach, lime, fern fronds and brine, along with medium body, a velvety texture and a long, potent finish. Drink it over the next few years.

Whiffs of petrol, brine and fennel extend from the nose to the palate, adding a minerally sheen and a savory tone to the ripe peach and nectarine flavors. Lacy and crisp on the palate, it’s mouth-smackingly good and easy to keep sipping.

Comes across as slightly rich, sweet and heavy for a kabinett, but this wine remains very enjoyable for its lush, sweet flavors of ripe peaches, baked apple and honey.

Smoke and mineral oil tones add layers of depth to the pretty white blossom, peach and tangerine notes on this crisp, nervy Riesling. Mouthwateringly tangy with a delicious note of Sour Patch candy on the finish.
