Dr. Pauly Bergweiler

Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler Winery is owned by Dr. Peter Pauly and his wife Helga. However the winemaking tradition of the Pauly-Bergweiler family dates back to the 16th century. In fact Dr. Peter Pauly, born in 1939, has a Ph.D. in agricultural science and is the offspring of the longstanding wine families Bergweiler and Prüm, first mentioned in official records in 1156. Dr. Pauly's grandfather, Zacharias Bergweiler, was considered one of the most respected wine-growers in the Mosel. Dr. Pauly took over his grandfather’s estate while still in school creating what is now Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler Vineyards. Our Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler reviews illustrate that the combination of cool climate, steep slopes and the Devonian slate help to make Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler wines some of the best Rieslings in all of Germany. Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler vineyards (about 42 acres in total) are located in some of the prime areas of Bernkastel, Wehlen, Graach, Zeltingen, Ürzig, Erden und Brauneberg and are planted with almost entirely Riesling. 1. $250
While sometimes the Pauly-Bergweiler wines come across as too simply sweet, this one hits all the right notes, from an outrageously exotic bouquet of dried apricots, orange marmalade and faintly sweaty socks that add a kinky edge to the rich, layered texture in the mouth and virtually endless finish. Should age effortlessly for decades, but it's pretty spectacular now.  — J.C.  (4/1/2010)

Dr. Pauly Bergweiler 2003 Bernkasteler Badstube Eiswein Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  1. $175
Absolutely incredible eiswein, with finely etched flavors of pear and pineapple that flow across the palate like fruit syrup borne on light-footed acids. Stunningly sweet, but with great balancing acidity and a finish that lingers for minutes.  — J.C.  (12/15/2004)

Reasonably priced for an eiswein, this immensely thick, oily offering coats the palate with intense sweetness, but also succulent flavors of flower syrup, ultraripe pears and apricots. Candied orange notes linger forever on the finish.  — J.C.  (9/1/2006)

Dr. Pauly Bergweiler 2009 Bernkasteler Johannisbrünnchen Eiswein Riesling (Mosel)

  1. $95
This eiswein is supersweet, yet remains decently balanced, thanks to a laser beam of bright acidity. After an initial hint of volatility, the flavors of preserved citrus and stone fruits are almost painful in their intensity, so sip it in small doses and savor the nearly endless finish.  — J.C.  (3/1/2012)

Dr. Pauly Bergweiler 2001 Urziger Wurzgarten Trockenbeerenauslese Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  1. $265
The color of polished brass, this extraordinary dessert wine boasts delicate floral scents layered over intense aromas of dried apricots and orange-blossom honey. It’s immensely sweet and viscous, yet balanced, thanks to a lime edge to the flavors of honey and apricots. The finish lingers, coating the mouth in a web of complex flavors. Cellar Selection. —J.C.  — J.C.  (3/1/2003)

Dr. Pauly Bergweiler 2001 Graacher Himmelreich Eiswein Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  1. $100
Acidity combined with sweetness dominate this wine, whose freshness contrasts nicely with its intense sweetness and overwhelming acidity. It should age indefinitely. —R.V.  — R.V.  (3/1/2003)

Dr. Pauly Bergweiler 2003 Bernkasteler alte Badstube am Doctorberg Beerenauslese Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  1. $150
This wine’s honeyed apple and pear flavors seem to represent the concentrated essence of fruit. This is intensely sweet, perhaps a bit low in acidity, but winemaker Edmund Licht has crafted a wine that shows amazing purity and extract.  — J.C.  (12/15/2004)

Dr. Pauly Bergweiler 2004 Bernkasteler alte Badstube am Doctorberg Beerenauslese Riesling (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer)

  1. $90
Shows a bit of minerality in its smoky scents, but the Pauly-Bergweiler emphasis is always on sweet, luscious fruit, which plays to this wine’s strengths. Candied apples and oranges finish gently, neither overly sweet nor overly acidic. Drink now–2020. Imported by Winesellers Ltd.  — J.C.  (2/1/2006)
