Eberle
Gary Eberle is known as one of the pioneers of the Paso Robles wine region. Before founding the Eberle Winery in 1983, he headed up his family’s Estrella River Winery and in 1980 he cofounded the Paso Robles Appellation. The first release of Eberle Vineyards was his 1979 Cabernet Sauvignon according to our Eberle wine reviews. While Cabernet Sauvignon is still used to produce the top tier Eberle wines, the vineyards are also planted with Chardonnay, Viognier, Muscat Cannelli, Zinfandel, Shiraz, as well as various Italian, Spanish and Rhone grape varieties. In 1992, Gary was seeking additional space for the red wine program and created a 17,000 square foot underground cave below the winery in order to age all of the reds properly. Today, Eberle Winery produces over 25,000 cases a year and has become quite the tourist attraction in the Paso Robles AVA. This is a beautiful Cabernet to drink now with a good steak. It’s rich and complex in blackberry and black currant flavors, and is very dry, with lingering acidity. The tannins are thick but fine. The best Cabernet from Eberle in memory. Drink now.

Eberle 1997 Sauret Vineyard Zinfandel (Paso Robles)

This wine explodes on the palate with big berry fruit, peppery spices, chocolate-vanilla oak, and some warmth from the elevated alcohol level (labeled at 15.5%). The finish goes on and on, with layers of flavors steadily unfolding on the tongue. Could well be the best Eberle Zin to date.

Consistently one of the best Cabernets made south of the Bay Area, this year the wine is especially tasty. Not too ripe, with suggestions of blackberry and cassis and herbs, and some good, old-fashioned tannins.

Eberle’s estate Cab is a seriously attractive wine, due mainly to its soft, velvety tannins and delicious blackberry and cherry flavors. A hint of raisins is there, but adds seasoning to the finish.

Eberle 2007 Estate Bottled Cabernet Sauvignon (Paso Robles)

This Cab is made in a leaner, earthier style you can describe as food friendly. It has complex flavors of blackberries, black currants and coffee. For those critics who knock California Cabernet as too ripe, this will come as a pleasant surprise. Drink now–2013.

Fancy, plush fare from this veteran South Coast producer. Floods the palate with ripe blackberry, cherry, mocha and peppery spice flavors wrapped in soft, luxuriously sweet tannins. The finish is long and reprises the cherry-and-spice theme.
