A delightful Pinot Noir for drinking now. It’s opulent in raspberries, cherries and peppery spices, overlaid with sweet, toasty oak. Crisp, zippy acidity makes the finish clean and bright.

In this lightweight but nicely textured wine, decent complexity shows in the tart berry, rhubarb and cocoa aromas and flavors. Mild smoke and leather accents provide palate interest while the tart-sweet close has gentle peppery notes.

They managed to get a lot of flavor and oak into this wine. It has flavors of peaches and sweet honeydew, with layers of smoke, vanilla and spice. Very clean and satisfying, and a good value.

The Chalone Wine Group created the Echelon brand in 1997 to offer a range of inexpensive wines to complement Chalone’s single-vineyard bottlings. This Pinot Noir certainly tastes much better than its price would have you believe. With fruit coming mainly from growers in the cool-climate Santa Lucia Highlands above California’s Salinas Valley, the wine is packed…

The nose is unusually foresty and smacks of orange, tree bark and some camphor. Sweet and full, with some long, spicy notes. A little out of the ordinary.

From Chalone’s second label. A perfectly acceptable wine with lots of up-front fruity flavors and quite a bit of elegant structure for this price. It’s dry, round and supple, and has a surprising edge of quality and depth. You have to hand much of the credit to the excellent vintage, which aids all wines, not just expensive ones.

Spice and peach flavors are at the core of this wine. ItÕs got moderate body, some pleasant mineral overtones and a crisp, clean finish.
