Eikendal 2008 Classique Red (Stellenbosch)

Composed of 40% Cab Sauv, 30% Merlot and 30% Cab Franc, this is a rich and robust Bordeaux-style blend with assertive notes of tanned leather and cigar box among the expected boysenberry and black currant fruit core. Firm tannins grip the mouth and linger through the long mocha-flavored finish. Drink now–2015.

A savory nose with hints of balsamic and smoke, balanced by cassis and cedar, start this wine out right. In the mouth, it’s complex and assertive, with flavors of anise, spice and plum. Pronounced tannins need some time to age, but overall the wine is excellent now.

Eikendal 2010 Chardonnay (Western Cape)

A flinty and mineral-driven Chard that also expresses a soft backnote of fresh savory herbs, white florals and clover on the nose. There’s plenty of rich fruit to be found on the round palate, as the assertive toasted apple and honeydew flavors flood the mouth and remain through the long finish.

Eikendal 2003 Chardonnay (Stellenbosch)

Ample toasty oak here, but it doesn’t entirely bury the sweet apple-pear-and tropical fruit. Styled like many New World Chardonnays, and fits comfortably in that league. If woody, it’s tasty and well-made. Shows potential to be a serious player, with some fine tuning and restraint on the wood.

Inky-dark with toasty oak over blackberry and dark chocolate aromas and flavors. Displays some nice forest floor notes plus a winning, smooth feel from midpalate through the finish. This taut, structured, darkly appealing 57% Cab Sauv, 35%Merlot, 8% Cab Franc blend should improve further for another year.

Green grass and a hint of baby powder are paired with notes of green gooseberry and lime on the nose, while riper but similarly tart flavors of white cranberry and citrus take hold of the mouthwatering palate. Drink now.

Peppery notes emanate from the bouquet first, followed by more traditional notes of black plum, black currant leaf and dried fig. The mouth is loaded with more brambly fruit flavors against an easygoing structure and light tannins.
