EOS

Originally named for the Goddess of the Dawn in ancient Greek mythology, Eos Estate Winery was founded in 1985 by the Arciero family. In fact the Paso Robles based winery was modeled after the monastery of Monte Cassino in Italy, near the Arciero family’s hometown. In 2010, Eos Vineyards was acquired by Foley Family Wines, also a family run business. Amy Freeman, who joined Foley in 2010 as an assistant winemaker, is currently the head winemaker and oversees all of the Eos wine production. There are three different lines of wine within Eos, including the entry Lost Angel line, the Estate and Estate Reserve lines. While the Estate Reserve includes only a Zinfandel and a Bordeaux red blend, the Lost Angel and Estate series include wines produced from Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat Canelli, Pinot Grigio, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and various blends according to our Eos wine reviews. This dessert wine has pushed itself to the front of the line of California sweeties, and the ’04 is a great bottling. It’s enormously sweet in late-harvest character, with apricot liqueur, pineapple tart and vanilla cream flavors that are brightened and boosted with cleansing acidity. With 21% residual sugar, this is an enormously sweet wine, one of the most honeyed of the vintage. A little sugar goes a long way, of course, but this wine also charms with rich, powerful apricot, peach and vanilla custard flavors, perfectly balanced with crisp acidity. Tears of Dew has established itself as one of the leading white dessert wines in California, and the ’05 is nobly in that tradition, although it’s not quite up to the astonishing opulence of ’04. EOS 2001 Cupa Grandis, Peck Ranch Vineyard Block P7 Petite Sirah (Paso Robles)

With this thick, dark wine, the folks from EOS have pumped up the volume. It’s super soft and supple, with velvety tannins and lots of black cherry, coffee, chocolate, herb, spice, vanilla, toast and earth flavors.
