A stunning Pinotage that shows great varietal character in its aromas and flavors of black cherry and currant infused with spicy notes of biltong, bark, clay, cinnamon and soft tar. The wine is firmly structured, with gripping tannins and medium acidity, striking a balance between the astringency of the tannins and freshness of the fruit. Nuances of baking spice…
Eenzaamheid—Dutch for solitude—is named in honor of the isolated vineyard that the grapes for this wine are sourced from. Opaque and very dense on the nose with deep, focused, black plum and berry fruit. Toasty oak is nicely melded with the strong fruit, adding smoke and tobacco notes. A chewy mouthfeel and long dark finish complete the package. Should improve through 2006, and hold well beyond that.
Alluring orange pith and blossom aromas are dusted in cinnamon and paired with cardamom and clover honey. All of this corresponds on the palate, with a hint of sweet golden apple. The herbed butter finish and clean acidity keep the supple viscosity from becoming thick or sticky. —K.F.
This wine would soothe most ills with its comforting, deep aromas of wheat bread, black plums and blueberry jam. Ditto for the palate, which also offers some toasty char. Finishes with an herbal twinge. —K.F.
A bit of horse funk opens up the nose, but it never overpowers. Some fresh herb notes add nuance to black pepper, dark berry and menthol flavors. Finishes warm and spicy. Despite 15% alcohol, this wine is nicely balanced, with dusty tannins. Imported by Vineyard Brands.
A fresh, vibrant nose of melon and tropical fruit starts this clean Chenin from Fairview. Minerally and bouncy with fruit and a touch of honey. Overall a crisp but complex wine with a snappy finish.
