Don’t reject this Syrah, Petite Sirah and Cabernet blend because it’s non-vintage. So are many great Champagnes. Made from the 2006 and 2007 vintages, it’s absolutely delicious, so stuffed with blackberry, black currant and bacon flavors, you can’t help but be impressed. It’s also very young and fresh in acids and tannins, so give it a year or two in order to knit…

Tasted in a group of wines considerably more expensive, including from Napa Valley, this Cab stood out for its purity, balance and restraint. Really impresses for its structure, so nicely tannic and firm, and the way the currant, blackberry and cherry fruit flavors marry seamlessly with smoky oak. Represents a real step forward in Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon.

A lovely Chardonnay, crisp and streamlined. Shows rich flavors of pineapples, peaches and pears, made bright and clean by zesty coastal acidity. Grows better in the glass as it airs and warms, a good sign.

Earns a high score for sheer richness and decadance. Huge in blackberry, blueberry, cassis, dark chocolate, bacon, pepper and oak flavors, wrapped into big, velvety tannins. Impresses for its size, but is totally dry, and retains balance and elegance. Now–2015.

If this Syrah was from Napa, or even Sonoma, it would cost a lot more. It’s really good, with fine tannins framing delicious, complex flavors of ripe berries, cured meats, peppery spices and smoky sandalwood. Sophisticated and elegant, it’s worth a special search. Only 476 cases were produced.

This shows the impressive acidity and spice flavor that this cool part of Santa Barbara County coaxes out of its wines. With a touch of new oak, it provides balanced flavors of pineapple, lime, green apple, buttered toast, vanilla, crème brûlée and honeysuckle.

This is just delicious, showing all the fine attributes you’d want from a California Cabernet, except ageability. But who cares, when it’s this rich in blackberry and cherry jam, cassis and chocolate, and so balanced? Winemaker John Falcone has brought his years of thoughtful winemaking to this Cab, and of course the favorable 2009 vintage helped.

This ambitious blend is comprised of Syrah, Petite Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon. it’s quite delicious, a worthy followup to its predecessors, although it’s unclear why the winemaker chooses to combine vintages. Bursts with bright, savory cherry and blackberry fruit, brightened and boosted by fine acidity. A lovely, full-bodied red wine to drink now.
