With a couple of extra years already behind it, this Oregon Riesling is drinking well, but should be consumed now. It has the body of a Chardonnay, rich and round, with mixed stone fruits and a hint of bitter citrus rind. Quite dry and already mature.

From a mix of Walla Walla and Willamette fruit (hence W3,), this limited-production wine is firmly rooted in a base of apples and acid. Grace notes of spice and butter (from barrel fermentation and aging in French oak) give it added body and length, and it glides into a finish of cinnamon toast and apple butter.

Soft and slightly buttery, this smooth-drinking Pinot Gris deftly mixes spiced pear fruit with a pat of butter and a whiff of resin. It’s at a perfect point of drinkability right now.

Here is a fine effort, widely available (12,000 cases) and well-priced. Stainless steel fermented, it shows crisp, varietal flavors of ripe pear, augmented with a hint of cinnamon. Good focus and length. Best Buy.

Firesteed goes from strength to strength; this is their best Gris to date, enhanced perhaps by the unusually warm vintage. Its ripe fruit tastes like biting into a juicy pear picked right off the tree. Succulent, round and sweetly spicy, with noticeable residual sugar but very appealing semi-tropical flavors.

Firesteed’s mid-tier Pinot benefits from an extra couple of years of bottle age, delivering mature flavors of red fruits, textured with pine resin, herb, lemon oil and a hint of tomato leaf. Elegant and balanced, it’s a great choice for those who prefer some age on their Pinot.

Firesteed gives even its modestly-priced mid-tier Pinot extra time in bottle, which smoothes out the leafy flavors and softens up the tannins. It holds onto secondary fruit flavors of cooked rhubarb and strawberry, adding in hints of resin, herb and lemon oil.

Firesteed’s 10th vintage shows the consumer-friendly budget brand in top form. Here are tart, varietal flavors, mixing strawberry and sweet cherry fruit. Tannins tend slightly toward earthy, and there is a hint of unripe beet in the finish. But at the price, this is a solid, even fleshy, bottle of good juice. Best Buy. —P.G.
