If you buy this 100% Cab, don’t even think of drinking it now. Put it in the cellar and be patient. It has the soft tannins and herbal quality of a fine Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, but it’s just not ready to drink now. Give it until 2012, at least, to let the cherries, cocoa and red currants transmogrify to sweet mellowness.

From longtime Simi winemaker Nick Goldschmidt, now with Allied Domecq, the wine he really wants to make. It is ripe and rich, with flavors of blackcurrants and cassis, and the velvety soft tannins the appellation is famous for. This is a wine to watch, especially in a better vintage like 2001.

Forefathers 2009 Lone Tree Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Alexander Valley)

This has been a very successful second label from Goldschmidt, and with this 2009, they again hit gold. The wine is smoothly tannic and dry in black cherry- pie and red currant flavors, with all kinds of interesting herb, carob bean, spice and oak complications. It’s elegant and complex to drink now and over the next 5–6 years.

Fresh grapefruit and passion fruit form the center of this refreshing, zingy, full-bodied yet elegant Sauvignon Blanc. The finish is bright and lemony with just a hint of grassines for added complexity. A knockout from Simi winemaker Nick Goldschmidt, who returned to his native country to make this wine.

Strong in primary fruit now. Overwhelms with the ripest blackberries, cherries and red currants, with lots of toasty oak, and a hint of herbs. The tannins are dusty and soft. Fine if you like your Cabs young, but should benefit from 3–5 years in the cellar.
