Freemark Abbey 2001 Bosche Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $65
One of the best Cabs of the vintage. It’s still a young wine, all primary black currant and plum fruit flavors and toasted oak, with complex notes of coffee and mocha. This wine is extraordinarily rich and finely balanced, displaying power, elegance, finesse and an unreal depth of fruit along with great length. Drink now through 2015.  — S.H.  (12/15/2005)

Freemark Abbey 2004 Sycamore Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Rutherford)

  1. $70
A real success story for this hot vintage. Feels gracious and generous in the mouth, offering complex, fat flavors of blackberries, cherries, raspberries, mocha and cedar that turn spicy on the finish. The tannins are elaborately ripe and fine. The well-known vineyard is on the Rutherford bench, and production was 2,300 cases. Drinkable now, and should age well for…  — S.H.  (3/1/2010)

Freemark Abbey 2005 Bosche Cabernet Sauvignon (Rutherford)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $70
Drier and earthier than many Napa Cabs these days, this wine has subtle sage and sweet licorice that grounds its fruitier flavors of blackberries, cherries and raspberries. Very beautiful are the tannins, which are rich and pure, suggesting perfect ripeness. The small Bosché bottling has been a premier one for the winery for many years, and this ’05 is one of the…  — S.H.  (6/1/2010)

Freemark Abbey 2006 Bosche Cabernet Sauvignon (Rutherford)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $70
Very rich, ripe and complex, showing a near-perfect display of flavors and textures. The riper blackberries and black cherries have a chewy, meaty edge, with notes of cola and bacon. Very fine tannins and acidity suggest midterm to longterm aging, but it’s a splendid sipper now. Should develop through 2018, at least.  — S.H.  (5/1/2011)

Freemark Abbey 1993 Sycamore Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $35
Less famous than this winery’s Bosché Cabernet, the Sycamore is more refined and accessible in youth than its brooding cousin. The ’93, the current release (it’s held back for five years), is very rich, with pinpointed focus. Extremely fine, a real knockout. Perfect now but will go on for years.  — S.H.  (6/1/1999)

Freemark Abbey 2002 Bosche Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $65
The winery’s flagship single-vineyard Cab, from Rutherford, is extraordinarily rich and opulent, offering tiers of classic Cabernet flavors that don’t stop. Cassis, intense cherry, espresso, cocoa, dill, sweet anise, the list goes on and on. Marked by wonderful depth and balance, this long-lived wine is beautiful now and should improve through this decade before…  — S.H.  (12/15/2006)

Freemark Abbey 2008 Merlot (Napa Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $30
A very successful vintage for Freemark Abbey’s wines overall, and this young, intensely concentrated Merlot is a star of the year. Quite tannic now, with delineated blackberry, cherry, cassis, cola and spice flavors, its best years are ahead. Cellar this impressive wine for 4–6 years.  — S.H.  (5/1/2011)

Freemark Abbey 1994 Sycamore Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $39
The best Sycamore in years. Stunning concentration and integrity of aromas and fruit. Characteristic berry and cassis aromas with mint, cedar and smoke. Oaky and powerful. Tremendous depth of flavor; pure and delicious. So easy to drink, it’s frightening. A dynamite Napa Cab from a fabulous year.  — W.E.  (11/15/1999)
