This is a great, solid, chunky wine, with aromas of dark plums and violets. The open fruit is rich, tarry, with dark, dusty tannins and vanilla flavors underneath. It was aged for 18 months in Slavonian oak.

The color is just beginning to show signs of browning at the edge, but the wine is still fresh and vibrant. The nose is complex, showing licorice, summer fruits, caramel and roses. On the palate, it is soft and pleasant, but lacks some concentration. At its peak, but will drink well for a few years.

Smoky graphite notes with spice and black cherry open the nose of this nicely concentrated Barolo from the Sorano cru in Serralunga d’Alba. The wine is well textured with firm but velvety tannins and refreshing crispness on the close.

There’s a very interesting and unique Asian quality here that reveals itself on the nose as saffron, soya, clove and Chinese barbecue sauce. The wine is lean and compact in the mouth with a long, silky finish: Hold five to 10 years in your cellar.

With fruit sourced from various vineyard sites, this garnet Barolo delivers exuberant fruit tones of forest berry, dried raspberry and violets with delicate spice renderings in the background. This is a classy, happy expression of Nebbiolo with aging potential.

Starts off a bit subdued, with leather and cherries only emerging slowly over the half hour or so it is in the glass. But the flavors are solid, blending cherries with dried spices and some floral elements, and the mouthfeel is full and rich. Finishes on a tangy plum note.

This is one of the more complex wines from the 2003 vintage. The nose has aromas of blackberry liquer, smoked meat, truffle and road tar. On the palate the fruit seems a little heavier and more roasted, but still melds well with its earthy, mushroomy flavors. Medium finish.

There’s an attractively fine and nuanced quality to this classic expression of Nebbiolo. Pretty spice tones and oak renderings play a supporting role to bright berry fruit, cola, blue flower and licorice. The wine offers medium intensity fueled by a long, elegant finish.
