This is an intense and unexpected wine with austere and sophisticated notes of resin, tar, cola, black fruit and spice. The wine is elegant and streamlined in the mouth (thanks to 18 months of oak aging) but it also feels focused and determined on the palate.

There’s an intense or pungent quality to this traditional expression of Chianti that translates into aromas of resin, licorice, cola and wild berries. The wine is bright and lively and fills the palate with delicate berry flavors.

Not exactly powerful, but subtle as it deals wintergreen, leather and cedar in addition to black cherry. Quite oaky, but with enough blackberry, vanilla and tannin to come across balanced. Still condensed and tight, with the majority of the wine resting in the center as opposed to on the edges.

An attractive retro label doesn’t set you up for the very ripe fruit and almost Californian profile of this new-wave style Chianti. The black-cherry, vanilla and coffee flavors, soft tannins and plenty of toasty oak comprise a satisfying package. It’s a stylish, appealing wine that’s drinking well right now.

Fairly jammy and muscular, but not overly tannic. The nose delivers spice, leather, tree bark and marinade, while the round palate carries plum, berry and vanilla. A larger-scale wine, but not monstrous or heavy. Good for drinking now.

As much as we like the retro package, this time the contents are just too one-dimensional. The heavily toasted oak over the narrow fruit from the ’98 vintage reads as just that—toast, with vanilla and coconut shadings. Dry powdery tannins mark the taut finish.
