75% Syrah and 25% Cinsault from the oldest continually cultivated vinifera vineyard in the Walla Walla Valley. The spicy, intensely aromatic nose mixes black cherry, concentrated cassis, coffee, bacon, leather and roasted nuts. It unfolds in layer upon layer of rich fruit, tannin, leather and smoke. Dense, deep and Rhône-like, it finishes with a montage of meaty…

Smells like the genuine Rhône article, with high alcohol, black-currant fruit, and hard, tight tannins. Right now the tannin and alcohol overwhelm the fruit, and it feels a bit out of balance. Very French tasting, with good long-term potential.

There’s nice spice here, and the fruit definitely speaks of Syrah. Plump, fruity and flavorful, it shows polished berry, currant and cherry, set against mixed herbs and streaked with anise and smoke, with a bit of sweaty saddle in the finish.

That’s a lot of names for a simple wine; it’s pure Syrah, juicy and tart, dressed up with a very spicy, peppery sheaf that wraps it like peppercorns wrap a hunk of beef. Quick finish, but a nice ride.

The best of Glen Fiona’s current releases, this displays cool-climate varietal character, with mountain berry fruit, herb, spice, tar and a streak of licorice.

Green herb, Play-Doh and smoky-oak aromas are good indications of what follows on this Syrah’s palate—more wood (some say cedar; others oak), cream, chocolate and cherry flavors. Medim-bodied and a little high in acid, it finishes long, with chocolate and charred oak notes. There’s not a lot of ripe fruit here.

In 2004 new winemaker William Ammons began at Glen Fiona, and this is the first of his wines to be released. This is spicy with pepper and herb, both in the nose and in the mouth. The fruit is quite tart and tastes of rhubarb and cranberry.

Tart and tangy, with mixed red and blue fruit flavors, light acid, and a fairly thin finish. Tasted alongside Jaboulet’s Parallele 45, it’s not a bad imitation. Very pleasant sipping wine.
