Gunderloch 2005 Dry Riesling (Rheinhessen)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $19
Strikes a lovely balance between fruit and minerality, marrying ripe apple and orangey citrus notes with hints of petrol or diesel. Reasonably full-bodied, turning crisp and zesty on the spice-inflected finish. Drink now.  — J.C.  (9/1/2007)

Gunderloch 2005 Diva Spätlese Riesling (Rheinhessen)

  1. $20
The Gunderloch wines are among the best from Rheinhessen, even their non-site-specific wines like the Diva spätlese. Aromas of bergamot, pear and fresh greens give way to ripe pineapple, citrus and herb flavors. It’s fresh and zippy, offering a lot of refreshment value in an off-dry style.  — J.C.  (4/1/2008)

Gunderloch 2004 Jean Baptiste Kabinett Riesling (Rheinhessen)

  1. $20
Smoky, stony and minerally, but there’s also a solid core of melon and nectarine fruit in this medium-bodied, fairly dry kabinett. Crisp on the finish, where it picks up a hint of citrus pith. Imported by Cellars International, Inc.  — J.C.  (10/1/2005)

Gunderloch 2004 Dry Qualitätswein Riesling (Rheinhessen)

  1. $19
A bit leesy and reduced on the nose, but that should clear up within another few months (maybe even by the time you read this). Underneath is a plump, custardy wine that’s marked by citrus and mineral flavors. Finishes peppery, chalky and dry. Serve with anything from shellfish to poultry. On the dry side, this medium-bodied kabinett clocks in at 11% alcohol but seems balanced anyway, with peach and pear aromas and flavors given complexity through notes of smoke, clover blossom and mint. Crisp and refreshing on the finish.  — J.C.  (4/1/2008)

Gunderloch 2002 Jean Baptiste Kabinett Riesling (Rheingau)

  1. $18
If not for a sulfury-yeasty note on the nose, this wine would have scored higher. Its citrus and mineral elements bring to mind limes and riverstones, picking up luscious peach notes on the finish while staying fresh and lively. Try decanting, or hold another year or two before opening.  — J.C.  (8/1/2004)

Gunderloch 2004 Diva Spätlese Riesling (Rheinhessen)

This light-bodied, relatively dry spätlese starts off with some slightly rubbery scents, then moves into green apple and citrus. Picks up some spice and melon notes on the medium-length finish. Imported by Cellars International, Inc.  — J.C.  (10/1/2005)

Gunderloch 2002 Diva Spätlese Riesling (Rheinhessen)

Seems lacking in acidity, with slightly baked or cooked apple aromas and flavors that aren’t unpleasant, just lacking an extra dimension of verve or stuffing.  — J.C.  (8/1/2004)
